Services for Henry Louis "Hank" Meyer, 84, of Fremont, Neb., who died Sunday, June 21, 2009, in Fremont, were held Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at the First Baptist Church. Interment followed in Memorial Cemetery, with military honors rendered by the Fremont Honor Guard of American Legion Post 20 and VFW Post 854. He was born Oct. 14, 1924, in Platte Center, Neb., to Louis and Meta (Settje) Meyer. He grew up on the family farm near Creston, Neb., and graduated from Creston High School in 1941. He attended the Van Sant Business School. A combat veteran, Hank served in the United States Navy from June 18, 1943, to Feb. 6, 1946. During his military service, his parents had moved to Fremont, so upon being discharged, Hank went there. He was employed by Jud Whitehead Heater Company, then he went to work for Hormel's. He retired from there in 1990, after 38 years. On June 29, 1947, Hank was married to Vivian Kent. Hank was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and head usher. He helped organize Cub Scout Pack 102 at Washington Elementary School and was active with that scout pack. He also served in leadership training for the Boy Scouts. Hank and his wife, Vivian, were the first husband-and-wife team to receive the Life Membership Honor from the Washington School PTA. He was a volunteer fireman and, for 15 years, coached the Little League ball team sponsored by the volunteer firemen. Hank also worked with American Legion baseball for 12 years. He was active in Union Local 216 and helped start the Hormel Credit Union (now Fremont First Central Federal Credit Union), and had served as its president and then CEO. He was currently serving on the board and had served for 50 years, and he was president for four years of the Hormel retirees. He was a member of American Legion Post 20 and VFW Post 854, and he was also a member of the Fremont Eagles Aerie 200. Survivors include wife, Vivian; four sons, Richard Meyer, of Mission, Texas, and his friend, Carol Biard, Ronald G. and wife, Jane Meyer, of Fremont, Jeffrey T. Meyer, of Fremont, Jerome and wife, Valerie Meyer, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Ellen and husband, Jean Snell, of Arkansas City; brothers, Glenn H. Meyer, of Omaha, Donald J. and wife, Delores, of St. Louis, Mo.; five sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. Hank was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Terri Jo; his parents, Louis and Meta; and brothers, Ralph 'Murph' Meyer, Phillip Meyer, and Kenneth Meyer.

A memorial has been established for the First Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ludvigsen Mortuary, 1249 E. 23rd, Fremont, NE 68025. ADV.
