Zelfa Marie Lake
Zelfa Marie Lake, 90, lifelong Newkirk resident, died early Wednesday morning, Jan. 9, 2008, at the Newkirk Nursing Center.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15, 2008, at the First Christian Church with the Rev. James Hollifield, minister of the First United Methodist Church of Newkirk, officiating. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery.
Born July 6, 1917, at the family home place in rural Newkirk, she was the daughter of Joseph Wesley and Katherine L. (Schuessler) Spore. As a teacher, she taught classes at Magnolia rural school, at Liberty School, east of Kildare, at Prairie Chapel, at OK School and in Newkirk, where she retired May 22, 1978.
Survivors include one son, Mike Lake, of Newkirk; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Nelson Lake; her parents; one brother, Vester Spore; and a sister, Lorene Andrews.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church, rebuilding fund through Eastman National Bank, Box 468, Newkirk 74647-0468.
Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.
Jack C. Kelley
Jack C. Kelley, 85, of Arkansas City, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at the First Southern Baptist Church in Arkansas City. Interment will follow in the Hope Cemetery.
Jack was born March 10, 1922, in Arkansas City, to Earl Preston Kelley and Ruby Agnes (Martin) Kelley. He attended Arkansas City schools, graduating from the high school in 1941. Jack entered the United States Army, serving in the Philippine Islands and Japan.
On Feb. 14, 1948, he married Hazel L. Baker in Arkansas City and the couple made their home in Wichita. Jack worked for Boeing for 20 years. In 1982, they moved to Arkansas City where Jack worked as a truck driver at Total Petroleum.
Jack was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Arkansas City.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Kelley of the home; son, Richard Kelley and wife, Evelyn, of Molalla, Ore.; brother, Bob Kelley and wife, Annette, of Wichita; sisters, Betty Gilbert, of Yukon, Okla.; daughter-in-law, Kathy Kelley, of Sand Springs, Okla.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Don Kelley in 1992.
A memorial has been established with the First Southern Baptist Church in Arkansas City. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Dale Prentice Anderson
Dale Prentice Anderson, 89, Newkirk resident, died early Tuesday afternoon in the Newkirk Nursing Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at the Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Chapel of Primghar, Iowa, with the Rev. Cory Flanagan, minister of the United Church of Primghar, officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Primghar.
Born July 14, 1918 in Primghar, Iowa, he was the son of Arthur Peter and Sara Isoline (Bell) Anderson. He worked for the family business, Anderson Hatchery, in Primghar. Later he bought the business from his father and expanded to include a large hog and chicken feed business. He operated the business until his retirement.
Survivors include one son, Robert James Anderson, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two daughters, Sharl Gwen Taylor, of Newkirk, and Sara Gail Boyd, of Naples, Fla.; one brother, Weston Anderson, of Boothbay Harbor, Maine; one sister, Norene Elliott, of Rochester, Minn.; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie Louise (Beebe) Anderson; his parents; one brother, Lowell Anderson; and one sister, Nancy Anderson.

Anna Mae Roseberry
Anna Mae Roseberry, 88, of Emporia, formerly of Oxford, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at Presbyterian Manor in Emporia.

Mary Lucille (Lucy) Miller Neumann
Mary Lucille (Lucy) Miller Neumann, 91, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at her daughter Jane's home.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008, in Arkansas City, at the Trinity Episcopal Church, corner of A Street and Walnut.
She was born in Winfield, to Helen Belden Miller-Creasy and Orus Edward Miller. She was adopted in later life by Edna Wheatley. She lived her elementary school years in Gregory, S.D., but resided in Arkansas City, most of her life and in Ponca City, when her health deteriorated. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1934 and attended Arkansas City Junior College and Vanderbilt University.
In 1943, Lucy married John Howard Neumann. They were the parents of three children, Nancy, Jane and John Jr. After Howard's death in 1962, she was the secretary at Trinity Episcopal Church full-time, until creating a monthly magazine and traveling statewide for the Kansas Food Dealer's Association. She also published a newspaper for the Jayhawk Food Dealers, of Topeka, and establisher her own firm, Jayhawk Publications, which she continued to operate until a few years before her death. In 2001, she published her book, "The Lust for Land," which detailed hundreds of stories about the settlement of South Central Kansas, during the land runs of 1889 and 1893. She had a long history with Arkalalah festivals, working and attending for 75 years, being named grand Marshall in 2004, and she was the proud mother of Arkalalah Queen Nancy in 1965, Queen's Court attendant Jane in 1966 and grandmother of Arkalalah Queen Amanda Mott in 1996.
She was associated with the Arkansas City Daily Traveler for 13 years, as a reporter, society editor, correspondent for United Press and served as the first woman city editor until resigning to raise her family. She continued to write "The Chatter Box" weekly column, feature stories and filled in for the editor when needed.
Her associations were varied, being the second president of the local Jaycee Jaynes, president of Frances Willard PTA, a local officer and regional board member and Camp Brookside director for Girl Scouts, served seven years on regional and national Boards of Directors for National Camp Fire Girls, a member of Fortnightly Club, local and state officer of Betty Bonney Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and served nationally as publisher of the DAR Convention Magazine, president of Junior Service League, president of the Cowley County Mental Health Association, officer in the G.A. EHU Unit, member of Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, promoter-volunteer worker for the Cherokee Strip Museum, member of the Kansas Authors Club, volunteer at Denton Art Center, member of Trinity Episcopal Church since 1940 and served as full-time and part-time secretary and altar guild.
She enjoyed traveling all over the world and the United States. She was an avid tennis player until she was 86 years old, when triple by-pass surgery ended her playing years. She was a member of the Arkansas City Country Club, the Women's Golf Association and the local tennis leagues. She loved to read and worked a daily crossword puzzle. She spent many hours beading, embroidering, and china painting. She was also an avid bridge player, belonging to one of her bridge clubs for over 60 years.
Her greatest accomplishment, according to her, was her life with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never missed an opportunity to be with them all. She also, always enjoyed and appreciated her friends.
Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Mott and Jane Luetke, of Ponca City; and son, John Howard Neumann Jr., rural Isabel, Kan.; sons-in-law, Michael Mott, Dieter Luetke, Don Kerr and his sisters, Marnell, Sharnell and Gaynell; daughter-in-law, Patti Neumann; six granddaughters, Amanda Mott Thompson and husband, Wilburn, Ashley Mott, Kelby Kerr, Alyssa Neumann, Ashton Neumann and Avery Neumann; three great-granddaughters, Mersades Campbell, Mackinzy Campbell, Isabella Thompson; brother-in-law, Cort Emery; and nephew, Roger Emery; cousin, Bob McCormack and wife, Shirley.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; stepfather, E.V. Creasy; her adopted mother, Edna Wheatley; sister, Madeline Emery; and niece, Cheryl Emery.
A memorial has been established with Eastman National Bank, P.O. Box 190, Ponca City, OK 74602, to be distributed to Trinity Episcopal Church in Arkansas City and Grace Episcopal Church in Ponca City.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Trout Funeral Home, Ponca City.

Harold E. Koch
Harold E. Koch, 81, of Arkansas City, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City. Mr. Steve Grimes will officiate. Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery.
Harold was born July 5, 1926, in Arkansas City, to Guy Koch and Esther Pearl (Johnson) Koch. He lived in Arkansas City his entire life. Harold was a master plumber,
serving the public all of his working years. He was well known for his honesty, work ethic and random acts of kindness. Harold was an avid golfer and loved to be on the course with his two brothers. He loved the Navy and the ocean, serving during World War II. Harold was a yeoman on the supply ship, Virgo, in the Pacific. He spent both years of his service on the water until his honorable discharge in June 1946.
Harold then met his wife to be, Jean Broyles, on a blind date arranged by her sister, Lucille. On Aug. 16, 1946, the couple were married in Arkansas City, and they had a daughter, Edwina.
Retiring in 1988, Jean and Harold loved to travel the United States and spend time planting flowers in the yard. "Working together" was their motto.
He was a member of the V.F.W. and the Church of Christ in Arkansas City.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Koch, of the home; daughter, Edwina Broadhead and husband, Don, of Wichita; grandson, Jeret L. Schisler and wife, Valery, of Wichita; two brothers, Alan Koch and wife, Lucille, and Loyd Koch and wife, Charlene, all of Arkansas City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Orin Koch, Richard Koch; and three sisters.
A memorial has been established with the American Lung Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.

Dustin Ray Cook
Dustin Ray Cook, 29, of Geuda Springs, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at the Via Christi Medical Center - St. Francis Campus in Wichita.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, January 14, 2008, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Pastor Gale Rider will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Sunday.
Dustin was born March 22, 1978, in Arkansas City, to James Darrel Cook and Debra Jean (Richards) Cook At the age of 3, Steve Dowler became a father to Dustin, following his marriage to Dustin's mother, Debra. He graduated from Oxford High School in
1996.
On Dec. 19, 1998, he married Ame Elkins and the couple had a son, Gage.
Dustin worked at Stellex Aerostructures in Wellington, Kan Pak and Creative Community Living.
Survivors include his son, Gage Cook, of Hutchinson; parents, Steve and Debra Dowler, of Geuda Springs; brother, Nathan Cook and wife, Tricia, of Geuda Springs;
grandparents, Dean and Bea Richards, of Geuda Springs, and Ruth Dowler, of Nashville,
Tenn.; great-grandmother, Margaret Blevins, of Wichita.
Dustin was preceded in death by grandparents, J.L. Dowler, Ivan D. Cook and Esther
C. Johnson.
