Audrey Laverne Smith

Audrey Laverne Smith, 98, of Hominy, Okla., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at the Trinity Retirement Community in Beavercreek, Ohio. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at the Powell Funeral Home in Hominy. Friends may call at the funeral home at 1 p.m. the day of the service. Audrey was born June 12, 1909, in Cedar Vale, to Charley J. Bird and Ruby Cable Bird. She attended Cedar Vale schools, graduating from high school in 1928. She studied at Pittsburg State University, obtained a teaching certificate and taught at several one-room schools close to Cedar Vale. Teaching was her calling. One of her favorite memories was riding her horse, Dandy, over Lookout Mountain to teach. On Aug. 5, 1935, she married Chester Sidney Smith, in Newkirk. After marriage, she and her husband both taught school in Bloomington, Kan. Audrey and her family moved around Kansas, Illinois, and Oklahoma, while Chet worked for Texaco. Audrey and Chet retired in Hominy in the summer of 1962, where they belonged to the First United Methodist Church. One of Audrey's fond activities was helping support the church with her work in the Methodist women's rummage sale. Audrey also enjoyed gardening and belonged to the Hominy Garden Club. She left Hominy in 2001 to move in with her daughter, Chestine Washing, in Beavercreek, Ohio. Survivors include two children, Chestine Ann Washing and Chester Sidney Smith, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Anne Chessman Smith; grandchildren, Todd Allan Washing, Lori Annette Washing, Margaret Harris Smith, and Ellen Dunbar Smith; granddaughter-in-law, Michele Trail Washing; great-grandchildren, Sydney Renee Washing, Jacob Trail Washing and Ryan Albert Washing. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one son, Harry Alfred Washing; two sisters; and one granddaughter.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Powell Funeral Home, Hominy, Okla. ADV.


Leota Cummings

Leota Cummings, 80, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at Via Christi/St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Wichita from head injuries. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2008, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Inurnment will follow in Highland Cemetery in Winfield. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. today. Born Aug. 3, 1927, in Arkansas city, she was the daughter of Lota F. "Speedy" and Alta Mary (Summers) Shelburn. She was employed as manager of the Thrift-Costume Shop before working in the catalog department at J.C. Penney for several years. Survivors include her husband, Frank of the home; son, Monte Cummings, Burden; daughter, Dianne Cales, Winfield; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to William Newton Hospital, Winfield. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.


Agnes M. Howe

Agnes M. Howe, 92, Winfield, died early Tuesday morning, Jan. 22, 2008, at Good Samaritan Village. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 26, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church in Winfield. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in South Haven. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. Friday. The family will greet friends from 5-7 p.m. Born April 25, 1915, in Bluff City, Kan., she was the daughter of Frank and Emma (Chloupek) Topinka. She worked for the Winfield State Hospital and Training School in the formula room in the dietician department for 25 years. She then worked for St. John's College in the cafeteria until it was shut down. Survivors include her daughters, Val Joyce Adams, Haysville, and Marilyn Mitchell, South Haven; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Olen J. Howe; and brothers, Charles, Merle and Freddy.

Memorials have been established for the First United Methodist Church, Good Samaritan Village and Hospice Care of Kansas. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Charlotte M. Smith

Charlotte M. Smith, 86, Benton, Kan., died Wednesday morning, Jan. 23, 2008, at home. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-5 p.m. Sunday. Born April 30, 1921, in Lexington, Neb., she was the daughter of Owen C. and Nellie M. (Atkinson) Conway. She worked at William Newton Hospital as a nurse's aid. Survivors include her daughters, Donna Booe, Wellington, Linda Marshall, Benton, Patty Bessler, Ponca City; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Ralph L. Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the American Heart Association, Southern Care Hospice and the Kansas Humane Society. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.


Melvin Jay Current

Funeral services for Melvin Jay Current, 77, Arkansas City, were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007, at the Central Christian Church. The Rev. Steve Chambers officiated. Interment was in the Hope Cemetery. Vocalists were Betty Current and Stephen Butler. Pianist was Stephen Butler. Casket bearers were Jerry Hopper, Jim Titmus, Mark Bogner, Gene White, Jeff Myers and Dick Marrs. Honorary bearers were Ray Marrs, Bill Swaim, Tom Tyler, Norman Tramba, Dan Marrs, Bob Arnett, Jack Speer and Merle Peters.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home, Arkansas City.
