June E. (Avery) Gilkison

June E. (Avery) Gilkison, 82, Winfield, died Saturday evening, Feb. 2, 2008, at her home in Winfield. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-9 p.m. Wednesday. The family will greet visitors from 6-8 p.m. Born Nov. 27, 1925, in Miltonvale, she was the youngest of four children born to Walter Burton and Edith Melissa (Barkyoumb) Avery. She was bookkeeper and co-owner with her husband of Joe's Carpet and Interiors in Winfield. Survivors include her son, Greg Gilkison, Winfield; stepson, Garold Gilkison, Burlington; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph "Joe" U. Gilkison; brother, Boyd B. Avery; and sisters, Edith M. Richard and Ruby L. Kleinmanns.

Max Duane Elswick

Max Duane Elswick, 81, of Owasso, Okla., formerly of Arkansas City, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Tulsa. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today. The family will be present. Graveside services have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2008, at the Wakita Cemetery in Wakita, Okla. Pastor Keith Stone will officiate. Max was born March 21, 1926, in Anthony, to Pleasant Clyde and Bessie Marie (Shreve) Elswick. He was reared and educated around the Wakita, Okla., area until he moved to Ponca City, in 1941. He graduated from Ponca City High School in 1944. After high school, Max entered into the Marine Corp. He served in Okinawa in 1945. After the Marines, he attended college at Oklahoma A&M (Oklahoma State University) for two years. On April 28, 1951, Max married Evelyn Sue Teten, in Blackwell. The couple lived around Ponca and Tonkawa, then moved to Arkansas City in 1952, where they made their home for 50 years. Max worked for Pomona Tile for 12 years, then for Gordon & Piatt for 20 years doing electrical assembly and wiring of control panels until his retirement in 1988. In 2002 Max and Sue moved to Owasso, Okla. Max was a member of the Lynn Lane Baptist Church of Tulsa. Survivors include his wife, Sue of the home; one son, Mike Elswick and his wife, Jody, of Collinsville, Okla.; one stepson, Dennis Magers, of Newkirk; grandsons, Cory Elswick and his wife, Amy, of Wichita, and Perry Magers, of Newkirk; granddaughter, Denise Stine and her husband, Dwayne, of Okarche, Okla.; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Max was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Cari Griggs; and stepson, Fred Magers.

John William Reynolds

John William Reynolds, 90, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, at William Newton Hospital. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at Swisher-Taylor & Morris Chapel. Interment will be in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday. The family will greet friends from 6-7:30 p.m. He was born March 24, 1917, on the family farm in Pleasant Valley Township. He and his wife settled on the family farm, south of Winfield and raised cattle. He served the community more than 30 years as a school board member and president and as a director of The State Bank of Winfield for approximately 40 years. Survivors include his son, John Richard Reynolds, Winfield; daughter, Rebecca Reynolds Messall, Centennial, Colo.; sister, Patricia Kirk, Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Edna (Ziegler) Reynolds; wife, Juanita (Looney) Reynolds; son, William (Bill) Lawrence Reynolds; brother, George Reynolds; sister, Mary Reynolds Elder; and an infant brother, Robert.

A memorial has been established for the Hackney Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Swisher-Taylor & Morris Fuenral Home, Winfield.
