Edna Mae Hartman

Edna Mae Hartman, 90, of Arkansas City died, Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at the South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center in Arkansas City. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday, February 14, 2008, at the Central Christian Church. The Reverend Steve Chambers will officiate. Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery. Edna was born March 26, 1917, to Jesse Leroy Pace and Minnie Elizabeth (O'Neal) Pace in Copan, Okla. She attended the Copan schools as a youngster. On May 14, 1933, she married Ernest William Hartman in Copan. The couple lived in Chanute, Wichita and moved to Arkansas City in 1951. Enda worked at Beech Aircraft during the war and at an overall factory and pie shop in Chanute. She worked for Mauer Nuer in Arkansas City from 1952 to 1979. Edna was a member of the Central Christian Church, DWF (Disciples Women Fellowship) and the Rodeo Ark Valley Credit Union. Edna was also very active at the Arkansas City Senior Center. She is survived by her two daughters, Patsy Sweely, and husband Ronald, and Jan Brown, and husband Jim, all of Arkansas City; two sons, George Hartman, of Hutchinson, Ernie Hartman, and wife Joann, of Emporia, Va.; three sisters, Mary Connor, of Wichita, Betty Tate and Velma Lou Virden, both of Bartlesville, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Edna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1989; her son, Jack Hartman; her brother, Bud Pace; and sisters Doris Kirby, Agnes Houchin, Bonnie Wohlford and Leona Beaty.

Harvey Lee Johnson

Harvey Lee Johnson, 74, of Wichita, Kan., died on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, in Wichita. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Reverend Oscar J. Adams officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Harvey was born on Dec. 25, 1933, in Pawnee, Okla., to William Johnson and Nola Lee (Carter) Johnson. He married Dollye Wilson on Jan. 14, 1956, in Pawnee. He attended schools in Pawnee and graduated from Lincoln High School. He then attended Langston University for a couple of years and later attended Okmulgee Technology to become a chef. He entered the U.S. Army in 1956 and served for 39 years and six months, retiring in 1990. While in the military he also worked at OSU and IGA, as well as working as a cook for the Country Club and the Holiday Inn. He also worked at the assisted living center. Harvey was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Russell Johnson; one sister, Lucille Elston; three brothers, Ernest Johnson, Joseph Johnson and Homer Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Dollye Johnson, of Wichita, Kan.; one son, Jeffery Johnson, of McAlester, Okla.; two daughters, Sylvia Bordenave, of Oklahoma City, and Marilyn Johnson; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Alvin Johnson, and his wife, Peggy, of Arkansas City, Kan., Kenneth Johnson, and his wife, Doris, of Stillwater, Okla., Henry Lee Johnson, and his wife, Nora, of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Bobbi Pitts, of Stillwater, Okla., Louise Avington, of Stillwater, Okla.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Robert "Paul" Blair

Robert "Paul" Blair, 80, of Arkansas City, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Unit.

Funeral services are pending and will be announced by the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home.


Juanita Evelyn Wahlenmaier

Juanita Evelyn Wahlenmaier, 92, passed from this life on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, to live in her eternal home with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Funeral services will be held at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home in Arkansas City 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008. The casket will be closed at all times. Burial, will be in the Parker Cemetery, Arkansas City, Kan., next to her former husband, Harold W. Wahlenmaier. Her family members plan to be at the funeral home one hour prior to the service to visit with family and friends. She was born on July 10, 1915, in Silverdale, Kan., the daughter of Roy A. and Mary L. (Caldwell) Hockenbury who preceded her in death. She attended school in Silverdale. She resided in Arkansas City for most of her life. On April 11, 1935, she married Harold W. Wahlenmaier and they became parents to two sons. He preceded her in death in 1961. For a time after his death she lived in California where she worked as a cosmetic salesperson for the May Department Store in Whittier. Afterwards she returned to Arkansas City. In 1991, she married again. That marriage continued until December 2007. She was a loving and devoted mother to her two sons and to her eight grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. She loved to read the Bible and watch and listen to sermons on TV and radio. She was an outstanding cook and loved gardening. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Her survivors include two sons, Irvin H. Wahlenmaier, and wife Patricia, of Weston, Mo., and Gary L. Wahlenmaier, and wife Mary, of Lakewood, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Chris Wahlenmaier, and wife Tracey, of Plano, Texas, Gary Wahlen-maier, and wife Elissa, of Orange, Calif., David Wahlen-maier, and wife Glenna, of Excelsior Springs, Mo., Steve Wahlen-maier, and wife Angie, of Weston, Mo., Kari Thompson, and husband John, of Lakewood, Calif., Michael Wahlenmaier, of Lakewood, Calif., and Lisa Phillips, of Weston, Mo.; and seventeen great-grandchildren who live in California, Indiana, Missouri and Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, William, Irvin and Kenneth Hockenbury; and sisters, Leveda Grant, Maxine Ziegler and Lorine Hockenbury; and granddaughter Gwendolyn D. Wahlenmaier-Bergin. The family is deeply grateful to the staff and workers at Medicalodge (North) Post-Acute and Rehab Center in Arkansas City for the loving and attentive care they gave to our loved one on a daily basis, from the time she became a resident there until five days prior to her death when she was transferred to Medicalodge East. Also, the family is grateful for the many visits she received from her niece, Joyce Groves.

Claude E. Messner

Claude E. Messner died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at the Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Okla. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Caney, Kansas. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Caney, Kan. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Caney, Kan., and he will lie in state from 10 a.m. Friday until service time on Friday. He was born Dec. 20, 1926, in Arkansas City, Kan., the son of Adam John and Fern Marie (Barnes) Messner. He was a graduate of Arkansas City High School. He attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Caney, Kan. Mr. Messner was owner of Messner Farms and was a respected leader, nationally and internationally, in the purebred swine industry. He sold livestock in 42 states and eleven foreign countries. He supported and was recognized by Kansas State University for his work with various junior college and university judging teams. He annually hosted one of the major judging events held in the Midwest. He worked with agriculture youth in many capacities also serving as a community leader for 4-H. In retirement he established a Boer goat herd and provided the community with quality garden produce. He will best be remembered as a loving, caring father, grandfather and friend. He married Eleanor Jean Orlowski on Sept. 4, 1948, in Burden, Kan. She preceded him in death on May 20, 2001. Survivors include two daughters, Patty Anderson, of Caney, Kan., and Gail Padden, of Lawrence, Kan; two sons, Dwayne Messner and Darrel Messner, both of Caney, Kan.; 11 grandchildren, Brian, Brett and Brandon Anderson, Derek, Dustin and Matt Messner, Ethan, Derek and Justin Messner and Tyler and Kyle Padden; nine great-grandchildren and one guardian granddaughter.
