James Thomas Simon

James Thomas Simon, 61, former Wichita resident and recently of Newkirk, died Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at his rural Newkirk home. Graveside services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, in the Resurrection Cemetery, Wichita. The Rev. Michael Peltzer, minister of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church of Harper, Kan., will officiate. The adopted son of Orville William and Mary Magdalene (Peters) Simon, Jim was born Aug. 19, 1946, in Iola, Kan. He was employed as a driver for Koch Engineering, ICS, the Kansas Coliseum and the State of Kansas. He retired in 2006. Survivors include his wife, Regina (Evans) Simon; one son, Kevin James Simon, of Wichita; two daughters, Christine Fenton, of Glendale, Ariz., and Connie Simon, of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Mary Dolores Blasi, of Wichita; seven grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established with the Catholic Charities, Inc., 532 N. Broadway, Wichita, KS 67214. Arrangements are under the direction of Devorse Flanagan-Hunt Funeral Home, Wichita. Local arrangements are through Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.


Cheryl Buck

Cheryl Buck, 47, of Arkansas City, LPN, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at her residence in Arkansas City. Private family services will be held for Cheryl at a later date. Cremation has been effected. There will be no visitation or viewing. Cheryl was born the daughter of Roy and Gladys Fleming on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 1960, in New York. Survivors include husband, Robert Buck, of Arkansas City; parents, Roy and Gladys Fleming; son, Steven Fleming, of Arkansas City, son, Robert Cobb, of Clearwater; son, Benjamin Alan Buck, of Arkansas City; sister, Brenda Buck, of Chilocothe, Mo.; brothers, Michael Fleming, of Oklahoma, Tom Rice, of Alabama, Ken Rice, of Missouri; and one grandchild.

Robert "Paul" Blair

R. Paul Blair, 80, of Arkansas City, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Unit. Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at the First Southern Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Parker Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the church from noon until service time on Saturday. Paul was born March 23, 1927, in Clayton, Okla., to John B. and Theresa May (Blalock) Blair. He was reared and educated in Clayton, graduating from high school in 1945. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M with a bachelor's degree in 1949 and a master's in 1955. Paul married Peggy M. Gentry on Dec. 25, 1953, in Clayton. He taught in Clayton and Antlers, Okla., before the couple moved to Arkansas City in 1954. Paul and Peggy celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2003, and had been married 52 years at the time of her death. He taught school and served as principal for 38 years. He was principal for several Arkansas City schools including being the first principal at the "new" Frances Willard building. Paul was also a Kiwanis Teacher of the Year in the early 1960s. Paul was a longtime member of the First Southern Baptist Church and a Sunday school teacher, the Arkansas City Lion's Club, vice chairman of Headstart, the Midian Shrine of Wichita; the Royal Arch Masons, Crescent Masonic Lodge No. 133 AF&AM Arkansas City, Juvenile Board, the Gideon's and the City Human Relations Council. Survivors include one son, Mark and his wife, Dee Anne Blair, of Germantown, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Jason and his wife, Heather Blair, Kristen and her husband, Dr. Ben Bowman, Erin and her husband, Brad Johnson, and Emily Ann Hollenback; great-grandchildren, Adelyne Grace Johnson and Lily Hollenback. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Peggy; a daughter, Margaret Ann Hollenback, and his brother, Jimmie H. Blair.

Memorials have been established with the Presbyterian Manor Good Samaritan Fund or The First Southern Baptist Church. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
