Charles Ross Kail
Charles Ross Kail, 70, longtime rural Newkirk resident, died unexpectedly Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at the Ponca City Medical Center. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008, at the First Christian Church of Newkirk, with the Rev. Robert Ferris officiating. Interment will follow in the Newkirk Cemetery.
The body will lie in state at the funeral home until 9 p.m. Monday and until noon on Tuesday. The family will be at the Thad and Lori Jones residence, 821 W. Seventh Street and the Twila Balzer residence, 513 W. 10th Street.
Born Aug. 10, 1937, on the family farm northeast of Newkirk, he was the son of Archie Jacob and Rose Lorene (Bryson) Kail. He grew up on the farm and received his early education in the Newkirk schools. He graduated from Newkirk High School with the class of 1955, and while in high school he played the trombone in the high school band. After graduation, he attended Oklahoma State University and played in the OSU marching band. He graduated from OSU in 1959 with a degree in agriculture and entered actively into the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant through the ROTC program at OSU. He served at Ft. Monmouth, N.J., for six months, returning home to finish eight years with the reserves. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain.
Ross returned to the Newkirk area and was engaged in farming. He worked part time at the ASCS office in Newkirk, and it was at the office, that he met Karen Janice Parkison. Ross and Karen were married Oct. 6, 1962, in Newkirk. They established their home on the Winchell farm northeast of Newkirk, living there 10 months before moving to Winfield. He began employment as manager for Cowley County ASCS office in Winfield. After two years they returned to the Newkirk area and made their home on River Road where they lived and farmed for five years. At that time he also worked in the Arkansas City meat packing plant. In 1976 he became employed with United Parcel Service. In late 1970 the couple moved to their present location where they have since resided. Ross retired Aug. 1999 after 22 and a half years with the company.
After retirement the couple took their horses to southern Oklahoma where they at times, would stay two weeks just to ride in the area. He bought a fifth wheel and tried camping, and he found he loved the experience and never met a stranger in any of the campgrounds they frequented. Following retirement, Ross also found he 'needed therapy' and attended sessions twice each day at the coffee table in Main Street Bakery just to keep his life in sync and help to settle the problems of the world.
Ross was a member of the First Christian Church of Newkirk and had served as an elder. He was also a member of Excel RV of Oklahoma. He enjoyed hunting, camping and traveling to new places. He relished reading, especially Louis L'amour books and had read all of them several times. He enjoyed listening to the music of the Big Band sounds as well as jazz and blues. He also enjoyed the Gaithers. Ross never became tired of his cow-calf operation, but he found his greatest joy in his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Karen; his son and daughter-in-law, Matthew A. and Brenda Kail, of Newkirk; his daughter and son-in-law, Lori A. and Thad Jones, of Newkirk; two sisters, Twila Ann Balzer and Irma Lee Bain, both of Newkirk; his grandchildren, Dalton Jones, Katie Kail and Megan Jones; his step grandchildren, Joshua and Tammy Holinsworth, Luke and Danielle Holinsworth and Mark Holinsworth; three step great-grandchildren, Haley, Jace and Bailey Holinsworth; his step father-in-law, Ralph Shupe, of Arkansas City; a brother-in-law and his wife, Bob and Carlita Parkison, of Edmond, Okla.; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Candy and John Sanborn, of Newkirk, and Liz and Jim Ramsey, of Wellington; and numerous nephews and nieces.
