Doris Inez Kent
Doris Inez Kent, 84, longtime Newkirk resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at the Ponca City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Memorial services will be held at noon, Sunday, March 9, 2008, in the Choctaw Meeting House in Colgate, Okla., with the Rev. Bill Weathers officiating.
Following her request, cremation has been effected.
Born Sept. 1, 1923, in Oklahoma City, she was the daughter of Abe Ned and Lena Bertha (Carr) Ned, original enrollees of the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes. She was employed by the Department of Human Services as a home provider, retiring in 1994 due to ill health.
Survivors include four children, Dennis Crawford, of Newkirk, Lynn Bebout, of Wynnewood, Jim Hampton, of Deer Creek, and Don Hampton, of Tallahassee, Fla.; siblings, Nina Johnston and Ozellia Dayton, both of Coalgate, Edith Moobs of Atoka, John Ned of Las Vegas, Nev., and Betty Perrier, of Shawnee; 12 grandchildren; andseveral great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Edmond Hampton, Dick Crawford and Aaron Kent;
her parents; one brother, George Ned; and one sister, Maxine Ned.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller-Stahl Funeral Service, Newkirk.
Lyman John Burnett
Lyman John Burnett, 93, of Arkansas City, died Monday, March 3, 2008, at the Presbyterian Manor Health Care Unit.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008, at the Bible Christian Church. The Rev. H. Dean LaVelle and Pastor Vern Richerson will officiate. Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery.
Lyman was born Nov. 15, 1914, in Guthrie, Okla., to Lawrence J. and Lizzie N. (Leach) Burnett. He was reared and educated in Arkansas City, graduating from Ark City High School in 1934.
On March 5, 1937, he married Thelma Gillock. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. Lyman worked as a Pipeline Engineer for Kaneb Pipelene Company until his retirement. Lyman was a member of the Masonic Order for over 60 years. He was also a member of the Bible Christian Church.
Lyman was an avid sports enthusiast and during his school years he played any sport offered. He played semi-pro baseball for the Shell Oil team in both Ark City and Ohio. He enjoyed bird hunting into his 80's, traveling to Cawker City, Kan., for the first day of pheasant season for 40 years. Golf was a passion for Lyman for many years and he spent many enjoyable days at Spring Hill Golf Course. Lyman was instrumental in the foundation of Two-Rivers CO-OP.
Survivors include his three daughters, Linda Mullins, of Arkansas City, Judi Fenton, of Wichita, Karen Lowther, of Denton, Texas; four grandchildren, Todd Tayrien and his wife, Sheryl, of Wichita; Troy Tayrien and his wife, Star, of Wichita; Leslie Walker and her husband, Dan, of Topeka, Darci Fenton, of Wichita; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Thelma; sister, Arlene Martin; and his great-grandson, Gage Tayrien.

Mildred A. Grissom
Mildred A. Grissom, 87, of Arkansas City, died Monday, March 3, 2008, at the Dexter Care Center.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2008, at the Bible Christian Church in Arkansas City. Interment will be held at 2 p.m. in the White Chapel Gardens in Wichita.
Mildred was born Jan. 10, 1921, in Rose Hill, to Clarence A. Pratt and Nettie L. (Metzger) Pratt. She lived with her aunts and uncles in Colorado as a youngster, moving back to Wichita to attend Wichita East High School.
On Nov. 28, 1940, she married Joe E. Grissom in Wichita, where the couple made their home. Joe preceded her in death in 1985 and Mildred moved to Arkansas City in 1986.
Mildred was an active member of the Bible Christian Church and a Brownie leader.
Survivors include her daughters, Jo Ann Baker and husband, Ben, of Arkansas City, Sandra K. Ramirez, of Lake Mary, Fla.; four grandchildren, Mark A. Finley, of Salina, Daniel J. Downing, of Haysville, Theresa M. Downing, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Andrew M. Downing, of Altamont Springs, Fla.; two great-grandchildren, Erin Downing and Jacob Downing.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Hazel Lee and two brothers, Orville Pratt and Lawrence Pratt.
Memorials have been established with the Bible Christian Church or the Dexter Care Center. Contributions may be made through the funeral home.
