Shirley Earlene Bright

Shirley Earlene Bright, 70, of Arkansas City, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at the Galachia Heart Hospital, Wichita. Funeral services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2008, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Parker Cemetery. Pastor Gale Rider will officiate. Shirley was born May 23, 1937, in Wellington, to Mitchell E. and Marie (Underwood) Bruce. She was reared and educated in Arkansas City. Shirley married Marion J. Bright in Chanute. The couple traveled with their family until settling down in Wichita in 1965. They later moved to Arkansas City in 1979, where they would remain. Shirley worked as a jet engine mechanic for G.E. until her retirement in 1991. She was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, and attended the Mt. Zion Community Church. Survivors include her two daughters, Sherry Williams and husband Steve, of Arkansas City, Patty Manuel of Arkansas City; companion, Bob Vanderpool, of Arkansas City; brothers, Bob Bruce and wife, Paula, of Davis, Okla., Mervin Bruce, of Winfield, Donald Bruce and wife, Aleta, of Arkansas City, Gary Bruce and wife, Caroline, of Arkansas City, Ronnie Bruce and wife, Gayle, of Canton, Texas; sisters, Janice Sparks, of Oklahoma City, Cheryl Baughman and husband, Bill, of Arkansas City, Rhonda Brumback and husband, Bob of Arkansas City, Brenda Sexton and husband, Tommy, of Roth, Okla.; grandson, T.J. Manuel, of Arkansas City; numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marion; sister, Marilyn Neuerburg; sister-in-law, Jody Bruce; and nephew, Jason Bruce.

A memorial has been established with the Mt. Zion Community Church building fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Online condolences may be made at www.rindt-erdman.com. ADV.


Joan E. Davis Kester

Joan E. Davis Kester, 79, went home to be with the Lord on April 25, 2008, at South Wind Hospice Home, Pratt, after a short illness. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 28, 2008, at the Haviland Friends Church, Haviland, with the Rev. Everett Jantz presiding. Interment will follow in the Haviland Cemetery, Haviland. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon on Monday at the church. She was born Oct. 30, 1928, in Pratt, the daughter of Elmer Ellsworth Sr. and Esther Mary Hendricks Davis. She was a lifetime resident of the Haviland area. Joan was a homemaker, and an Avon representative for 20 years. She attended Victory rural grade school, Haviland, Haviland Friends Academy, and Friends University in Wichita, and was a member of the Haviland Friends Church and Leona Missionary Society. On Jan. 3, 1950, she married Billy C. Hughes in Atchison, Kan. They had one son and the marriage ended in divorce. On June 5, 1954, she married Wilman J. Kester in Haviland. Wilman preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 1996. Survivors include two sons, Richard and wife, Charlene Kester, Arkansas City, and Ronald Kester, Haviland; two daughters, Patrice and husband, Paul Mc Carty, Pratt, and Michelle Kester, Wichita; brother, Elmer E. Davis Jr., Haviland; 13 grandchildren, Christina Freeman, Colorado Springs, Colo., Ryan Kester, Salina, and Camp Speicher, Iraq, Caroline Phillips, Wichita, Charise and Charity Kester, Arkansas City, Jared, Jason, Janae, Jalyn, Jamye, Jacob, Jaden, and Jaxon McCarty, Pratt; 7 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In additon to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, June Horn and Beverly Day Swan; and two great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be sent to Haviland Friends Church, Barclay College, or South Wind Hospice Home in care of the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Fleener Funeral Home, P.O. Box 763, Greensburg, KS, 67054-0763. ADV.


Maxine "Micky" Templar

Memorial services for Maxine "Micky" Templar, 80, of Arkansas City, who died Sunday, April 20, 2008, were conducted at the Memorial Lawn Cemetery, in Arkansas City, Kan. The Rev. Russ Fincham officiated. Special music was by Sarah McClachlan. Arrangements were under the direction of Hawks Funeral Home & Cremation Service, of Arkansas City.

Frances Virginia Hansing

Graveside funeral services for Frances Virginia Hansing, 94, of Arkansas City, Kan., who died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, were conducted at Grace Hill Cemetery, in Perry, Okla. Pastor Aaron Summers officiated. Special songs were "Softly and Tenderly" and "Just a Closer Walk with Thee." Arrangements were under the direction of Hawks Funeral Home & Cremation Service, of Arkansas City.
