Bonnie Jean Berg

Bonnie Jean Berg, 81, of Arkansas City, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at the Medicalodge East in Arkansas City. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2008, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Arkansas City. Pastor Mark Boxman will officiate. Interment will follow in the Parker Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home on Friday. Bonnie was born March 11, 1927, in Arkansas City, to Parker W. Hallmark and Loa E. (Bristol) Hallmark. She graduated from Arkansas City High School in 1945 and Cowley College in 1947. On May 23, 1947, she married John Stanley Berg in Winfield, and the couple made their home east of Arkansas City on the "Berg Kid Ranch." Bonnie worked for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier, from where she retired. Bonnie was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Arkansas City, where she served on the altar committee and the ladies guild. She was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion and South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center auxiliaries. Bonnie was an active member of the Rural Letter Carrier's Association and a delegate several times at the national conventions. Survivors include her three sons, Phil Berg and wife, Liz, of Salina, Mark Berg of Portland, Ore., Hal Berg and wife, Dena, of Arkansas City; two daughters, Christine Walker, Barb Sweet and her husband, Terry, all of Winfield; 20 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Berg in 1983; four brothers and a sister.

Betty Sue Ledbetter

Betty Sue Ledbetter, 67, of Parkerfield, died April 30, 2008, at her residence. Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Parker Cemetery. Robert L. Ferris will officiate. The casket will be open Sunday 1-8 p.m. and 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Monday. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Monday. Betty was born Oct. 30, 1940, in Eureka, Kan., to John Wesley and Eunice Irene (McIntosh) Gragg. She attended school at Burns, Cedar Point, and Peru, Kan. Betty married Virgil Ray Ledbetter on June 15, 1956, in Sedan. To this union three children were born, Terry, Vicki, and Gail. Betty continued her schooling in 1965 at Tulsa Vo-Tech, graduating in 1966 as a licensed practical nurse. She worked for Arkansas City Memorial Hospital until she returned to school in 1983 at St. Mary's of the Plains in Wichita, from which she graduated in 1984 with an associate's degree and became a registered nurse. She then continued working at Arkansas City Memorial Hospital, later South Central Kansas Regional Medical Center, as a team leader in the intensive care unit. She was an excellent nurse who took pride in the care she gave her patients and took time to know each one. She loved to teach new nurses ways to become better and felt like patients needed to be treated as you would like to be treated. After her retirement, she traveled extensively throughout the United States, Mexico, and Central America. Her hobbies were gardening, quilting, photographing her family, and playing slot machines. Survivors include one son, Terry Ledbetter and his wife, Willa, of Arkansas City; two daughters, Vicki Jellison, of Oakland, Ore., and Gail Leffler, of Jones, Okla.; nine grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, Jennifer, Brooke, Trevor, Tiffany, Bart, Shawn, and Sheralyn; and three great-grandchildren; brothers, Kenneth and his wife, Barbara Rogers, of Matfield Green, Kan., Bud Smith, of Brawley, Calif., and Ivoe Rogers, of St. Louis, Mo.; sisters, Johnna Lou Martin and her husband, Vernon, of Longton, Kan., and Neva Gorrell, of Peru, Kan.; sisters-in-law, Jane Adams, of Grove, Okla., June and Tom Murphy, of Pratt, Kan., June Ledbetter, of El Dorado, and Sue Friedel, of Andover; numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, in 2002; her father; stepmother, Ida; her mother; stepfather, Firm Rogers; brothers, Clayton and Wesley; and sister, Clete Pape.

Brandy (Riddle) Spencer

Brandy (Riddle) Spencer, 35, Wichita, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008, in Wichita, due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2008, at Miles Funeral Service in Winfield. Interment will be at 2 p.m. in Dewey Cemetery, Dewey, Okla. Friends and family may call at the funeral home from 2-5 p.m. Sunday. Born Oct. 8, 1972, in Fort Sill, Okla., she was the daughter of Jerry "Bear" and Lesley Riddle. She worked many jobs doing many different things and was a portrait photographer. Survivors include her children, Taylor, Jessica and Matthew of the home; parents, Jerry "Bear" and Lesley Riddle, Blackwell, Okla.; sister, Monica Nolasco, Oklahoma City; brothers, Chris Riddle, Ponca City, and Gleen Riddle, Ottawa, Canada. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jody and Cathie Sober and James and Lucille Bearskin; and by her brother, Gerry Carl Riddle.

WM. Jeff Spencer

WM. Jeff Spencer, 32, Wichita, did Tuesday, April 29, 2008, in Wichita, due to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 5, 2008, at Miles Funeral service in Winfield. Interment will be held at 2 p.m. in Dewey Cemetery, Dewey, Okla. Friends and family may sign a register book at the funeral home from 2-5 p.m. Sunday. Born May 12, 1975, in Bartlesville, he was the son of William A. Spencer and Jean McKinney. He was raised and educated in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School and later from Cowley County Community College with a degree in non-destructive testing. He worked in the aerospace and computer fields at Weather Data, Wescon and Hawker-Beechcraft. In December 2000, he married Brandy Riddle in Bartlesville, Okla. The couple lived in Caney, Winfield, and most recently, Wichita. Survivors include three stepchildren, Taylor, Jessica and Matthew of the home; father and stepmother, Bill and Sandra Spencer, Bartlesville; mother and stepfather, Jean and James Mooney, Winfield; sisters, Jolana Spencer, of Lyons, and Kara Larimore, Winfield; stepbrothers, Chris Drew, of Marina Del Ray, Calif., Jimmy Mooney, Rose Hill; stepsister, Donna Bower, Udall; grandmother, Opal Spencer, Dewey, Okla.; stepgrandmother, Melba Nicholas, Plainville, Kan. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Mike Nicholas; grandparents, Ralph Spencer, Hattie and Joe McKinney; and stepgrandfather, Woody Nicholas.

Edward L. Downs

Edward L. Downs, 87, Pleasant Valley Manor in Sedan, formerly of Cedar Vale, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at the nursing home. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, 2008, in the Cedar Vale Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. until noon on Tuesday. Born Sept. 20, 1921, in Grenola, he was the son of Edward L. Downs and Ira (Goodman) Downs. He was a retired service station employee and mechanic for over 40 years in Manhattan, Kan. Survivors include his wife, Nina (Zimmerman) Downs of the home; sons, Lloyd Downs, Manhattan, Kan., Cloyd Downs, Dayton, Ohio, Don Downs, of Inman, Glen Luther Downs, Manhattan; brother, George Downs, of Derby; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Faye, and brother, Donald.

A memorial has been established for the Pleasant Valley Manor Activity Fund, Sedan, KS 67361. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wheeler Funeral Home, Cedar Vale.
