Beverly Joann "Jo" Sutton

Beverly Joann "Jo" Sutton, 69, of Arkansas City, previously of Winfield, died Thursday evening, Dec. 20, 2007, at Presbyterian Manor in Arkansas City. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, at Miles Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Rose Valley Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday. Born Aug. 23, 1938, in Winfield, she was the daughter of David Duane and Sylvia Rose (Huff) Rowe. She was raised and educated in Rose Valley Schools until the family moved to their home by the river. She then attended Winfield schools, graduating from Winfield High School. On Nov. 17, 1956, she married Richard Sutton in Newkirk. To this union, four children were born. As a young person, Jo worked at Saint Mary's Hospital in the kitchen with her mother and siblings. Jo later worked at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center as a licensed mental health technician. She retired in the late 1980s. She enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and reading. She also liked to watch ice skating and rodeos on television. Jo loved horses. She collected pictures and puzzles and anything that had to do horses. As a young person, she loved to cook, travel and ride around and play cards, especially pitch. Survivors include her husband, Richard Sutton, of Arkansas City; her sons, Roger Sutton and wife, Pam, of Winfield, Darrell Sutton and wife, Terri, of Newkirk, Mitchell Sutton and wife, Mary, of Burden; daughter, Linda Gotthard and husband, Richard, of Rose Hill; brothers, Bill Rowe and Carl Rowe; sisters, Nelda May Crouse and Norma Jean Asbury; grandchildren, Tonya, Rebecca, Samantha, Brandy, Jennifer, Michael, Kelly, Lindsay, Richard and Kaitlyn; great-grandchildren, Aiden, Ethan, Brandon, Braden, Destiney, Aaron, Aliyeah and William; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Abigail, Spencer and Thomas. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorials have been established for the American Heart Association and for the Wesley Hospital Nurse's Scholarship Fund. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. David L. Sherman

David L. Sherman, 64, Winfield, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at his home in Winfield. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, at the Blessing Heights Church in Arkansas City. Interment will follow in Wilmot Cemetery, north of Winfield. Born April 1, 1943, in Scott City, Kan., he was the son of Squire and Ruth (Elliot) Sherman. He worked at Wesley Towers in Hutchinson. Survivors include his wife, Tressa Sherman, Winfield; foster daughter, Kendy Lyons, Winfield; brother, Robert S. Sherman, Winfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles Sherman; and sister, Wynona Sherman.

A memorial has been established in his name to help defray funeral expenses. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Miles Funeral Service, Winfield.


Jose "Joe" F. Gutierrez

Jose "Joe" F. Gutierrez, 80, Winfield, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2007, at his home in Winfield. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, at Holy Name Catholic Church. The Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Friends may call at the funeral home from 3-6 p.m. Wednesday. He was born Sept. 18, 1927, in Winfield, and raised by his mother, Ramona Amezcua, and stepfather, Jose Amezcua. He was a cement mason and retired from Grief Brothers as a production foreman. Survivors include his wife, Lola, of the home; son, Joe Gutierrez Jr., Winfield; daughters, Regina Gutierrez, North Little Rock, Ark., Gloria Garcia, Andover, Angela Gutierrez, Winfield; brothers, Ruben Ruiz, and John Amezcua, both of Winfield; sisters, Pearl Gomez, Leon, Kan., Ramona Torrez, Arkansas City, Maggie Trillo, Arkansas City, and Josephine Carrillo, Wichita; four grandchildren.

A memorial has been established for the Holy Name Catholic School. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of the Swisher-Taylor & Morris Funeral Home, Arkansas City.


Catherine Trussell

Catherine Trussell, 79, lifelong Ponca City resident, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, at home surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007 in the chapel of the Trout Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Ratliff, associate pastor, Northeast Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Catherine Virginia Gee, the daughter of Edward and Lillie (Barkley) Gee, was born on Feb. 29, 1928, in Ponca City. She received her education in Ponca City, where she grew up. On Dec. 25, 1946, Catherine married Emmett "E.W." Trussell. They were blessed with three children. Catherine worked as a real estate broker for many years. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Survivors include her loving husband of 61 years, Emmett, of the home; one son, Lyles Trussell and wife, Sherry, of Ponca City; daughters, Beverley Marsee and husband, Steve, of Billings, Mont., and Pamela Lough, of Arkansas City; eight grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Florence Lawson, Edward Gee, Lillian Gasaway, Bernadine McMonigle, Odelle Gee, Roy Gee, Nadine Irene and Gertrude Delphine. Casket bearers will be Ricky Trussell, Michael Perry, Wes Lough, Robert Padgett, Nic Postman and Rod Piatt.

Voneita Caroline Bartlett died Monday, Dec. 24, 2007, in Arkansas City.
