SOUTH HAVEN -- Early in the fourth quarter, Reese Blaylock turned to coach Darren McDorman after sinking a pair of free throws and joked, "It looks like I'm into it."
Those words best described South Haven's performance from the onset Friday night. The Cardinals used an up-tempo offense to create easy baskets in an attempt to wear off the rust from a 2 1/2-week layoff.
The Cardinals were anything but that last night, as they quickly got into a rhythm and coasted to a 62-36 win over Sedan.
"They didn't practice very much over Christmas break and I just thought that we needed to push the ball and get some transition baskets," South Haven coach Darren McDorman said.
Derrick Spencer -- who felt ill earlier in the day -- provided the spark, scoring eight of his game-high 16 points in the first quarter. Spencer was left wide-open in the left corner and sank a three-pointer for a 4-2 South Haven lead -- one the Cardinals would not relinquish.
Spencer then hit a layup in transition a few minutes later. He couldn't complete the three-point play, but set the tone for South Haven for the remainder of the night.
"He'd been sick all day," McDorman said of Spencer. "The nurse came into my office this morning and said Derrick was sick. The nurse said that he never comes into her office. He went home after school and went to bed. I didn't know how much he'd be able to go. Sometimes you play your best game when you're sick. He stepped up and did a really good job."
Sedan kept within striking distance until midway through the third quarter, as it came to within 24-17 at halftime and 28-20 on a Jayson Stettler three-pointer. Stettler finished with 8 points. Garrett Bane led Sedan with 11 points, while Jon Roggow also added eight.
But South Haven (4-2) used a variety of defenses on Sedan last night. Each one did the job, as the Cardinals forced Sedan into committing 24 turnovers, including 15 in the first half. McDorman said that his team hadn't even worked on a trap defense on the top of the key until Friday night. That showed how loose and focused South Haven was.
"We like to change up (defenses) to keep teams off balance," McDorman said. "We did a pretty good job. We adjusted well. I thought the boys played really well as a team."
South Haven's transition game really paid dividends in the second half, as it started to pour it on Sedan. Jake Davidson converted a transition layup for a 54-31 lead with 2:04 remaining. He finished with 11 points and four rebounds.
