Dexter girls remain undefeated; boys fall

By MIKE JOSEPH
Traveler Correspondent

CALDWELL -- Using their senior leadership and experience, the Dexter Lady Cardinals snapped a 3 year losing streak to the Caldwell Lady Jays in convincing fashion Friday night with a 70-53 win.

All four senior starters scored in double figures for the Cardinals, who kept their record spotless at 8-0.

After spotting the Lady Jays a 4-0 lead early, the Cardinals went on a 15-3 run and ended the first period up 17-9. Amanda Defore set the tone defensively in the first period with three of her eight blocked shots on the night.

"I just try to keep an arm's length between me and my opponent," said the 5-foot-11 senior of her technique on defense.

Krissy Kill led the charge in the second period, scoring 11 of her game high 20 points in the quarter, including two baskets from beyond the arc. Kill, another senior starter, scored 10 points in the first two minutes of the period as the Cardinal defense forced the Lady Jays to turn the ball over three times.

An 18-4 run by Dexter pushed the lead to 35-13 midway through the quarter. Seniors Camille Kahrs and Allie Crow combined for 21 points in the half as the Cardinals doubled up the Jays 42-21 at halftime.

"We just come out and play hard," said Crow, who finished with 10 points.

Kahrs, who added 17 points for the Cardinals said, "We just look for each other on offense, trying to get the easiest shot, and we play tough defense."

The Lady Cardinals led by as many as 23 in the third quarter as coach Debbie Callison was able to go deep into her bench. "We talk about playing the complete game," said Callison.

When asked if she was surprised at the outcome, Callison said,"I was nervous all the way until about four minutes were left in the game. Caldwell has some good shooters and they came back against us a couple years ago."

Kill, the senior point guard, hit four of five three pointers on the night, spoke about how the team spent the last two weeks, "We really worked hard on conditioning during the Christmas break and it has definitely paid off."

Dexter will have a tough stretch ahead next week as they will host Central of Burden on Tuesday and Argonia next Friday night.

BOYS
Caldwell 52, Dexter 44:

CALDWELL-- A second half rally came up just short as the Dexter Fightin' Cardinals fell to Caldwell 52-44 Friday night.

Trailing by 13 at the half, the Cardinals pulled with seven at 33-26 midway through the third quarter on a three-pointer by sophomore Asa Muntz and a 12-foot jumper by senior Cody Minor.

Devan Whaley's three-pointer and Braden Lebeda's putback off a miss pushed the lead back to 10 at 38-28 with 2:45 remaining in the period.

Garret Pudden pulled the Cardinals within eight on an offensive rebound and stick-back with just less than a minute to play in the quarter. But eight points would be as close as Dexter would get in the final period as the Blue Jays had an answer for every Cardinal run.

Trailing 13-9 heading into the second period, the Cardinals fell behind as Caldwell was able to turn three steals into a 9-2 run and a 22-11 lead midway through the quarter. The Blue Jays increased the lead, outrebounding the smaller Cardinals inside on offense for second-chance points.

Whaley led all scorers with 18 points for Caldwell, while Dillon Kuehny added 14 for the Blue Jays. Minor was the only Cardinal in double figures with 16, including eight in the fourth quarter.

Dexter (3-5) will host Central-Burden Tuesday night.

Second Amendment
Does the Second Amendment guarantee an individual's right to own a gun, as the Supreme Court recently ruled?

Yes, that was the intent of the founding fathers.
No, the founders were only talking about militias.
It's still unclear.
