New officials on board in Burden

By ROY GRABER
Courier Editor

BURDEN - Burden City Hall has seen some changes recently, as the city has hired a new city clerk and city treasurer.

Lorri Lowe, who formerly served the city as its treasurer, is now city clerk. Tara Woods has taken over as treasurer.

"We're very satisfied with both of them," said Burden Mayor Judy Colvin. "We interviewed a lot of people who were good candidates, so I think we made two really good choices."

The openings were created when longtime city clerk Melodi Bowen resigned. Bowen's husband, Brad, is now a minister at an Emporia church, and she is the city clerk at nearby Waverly.

Lowe's selection as city clerk created the treasurer's opening. But the treasurer's position was modified so that the treasurer now also doubles as an assistant to the city clerk.

"I'm so grateful they've hired Tara, too, because she's been a tremendous help to me," Lowe said.

Lowe, whose husband is Burden Police Chief Travis Lowe, is no stranger to working for government entities. Prior to moving to Burden, both Lowes worked for Chautauqua County. Lorri Lowe first worked in the county clerk's office before winning an elected term as county treasurer. She served in that capacity for four years.

And while she has that experience to her credit, Lowe said there are still things to learn no matter where you go.

"It is quite a bit different," Lowe said of her work in Burden. "I've had a little government experience before, but every position is different."

Woods has already gained valuable experience in the field of finance as a former assistant customer service manager for Bank of the West. She found it difficult, however, to balance a full-time job with being a full-time college student. The part-time hours with the city made perfect sense to her.

Wood presently lives in Winfield, although she says she and her husband are hoping to move to Burden.

Second Amendment
Does the Second Amendment guarantee an individual's right to own a gun, as the Supreme Court recently ruled?

Yes, that was the intent of the founding fathers.
No, the founders were only talking about militias.
It's still unclear.
