Argonia clicks on all cylinders in win over Dexter boys

By MIKE JOSEPH
Traveler Correspondent

DEXTER -- Argonia came out firing on all cylinders Friday night, jumping out to a 24-10 first-quarter lead on their way to a 66-28 win over the Dexter Fightin' Cardinals.

In a game that was closely officiated, fouls mounted for both teams throughout the first half. Thirty total fouls were called between the two squads, with Dexter being whistled for 17. Freshman Bradley Berkley picked up his third foul late in the first quarter and didn't come back until the third quarter.

The Raiders (6-2) held the Cardinals without a field goal in the second period, but could only muster nine points themselves in a half where neither team could find a rhythm.

Leading 33-13 heading into the third period, the Raiders spread the floor on offense and took advantage of the perimeter shooting of Lawson Hemberger and Leander Greene. With their success outside, Argonia was able to get the ball inside to Blake Brewster, who scored six of his 17 points in the third quarter. The Raiders stretched their lead to 54-19 heading into the final period.

With a running clock in the final period, Dexter mounted a 9-0 run prompting Argonia coach Dean Brewster to insert his starters back in the game up 54-28. The Raiders finished up with a 12-0 run for the final tally.

Despite the loss, Dexter coach Dennis Bryant was upbeat. "We gave them a good battle tonight. They (Argonia) shot the ball extremely well, but they knew that they were in a fight throughout the game. Once again, our boys won't quit. They played hard all the way to the end and we are looking forward to a chance to play them again next week in the tournament."

Senior Cody Minor led the Cardinals with 10 points on the night while Garret Pudden pulled down six boards to lead Dexter (4-6).

Dexter will host the Caldwell Bluejays in a rematch of last Friday's game to open the SCBL tourney on Tuesday.
