Home invasion victim faces charges

From ACPD

The Arkansas City Police Department investigated a home-invasion robbery at the residence of James Major, 514 E. Cedar, in Arkansas City Wednesday. Police have charged Major with illegally selling alcohol.

According to police reports, an interview with suspect Stephen Taylor and an interview with a witness revealed that both Taylor and the witness had gone to Major's residence to purchase alcohol. Both Taylor and the witness referred to Major as "the bootlegger," as he is known to sell alcohol after legal hours, on Sundays and to minors.

The witness claimed to have purchased alcohol from Major's illegally at least five times.

The Arkansas City Police Department has reason to believe that Major was selling alcohol without a license. The information provided by Taylor and the witness helped establish probable cause for a search warrant on Major's home.

The Arkansas City Police Department assisted by the resident Kansas Alcohol Beverage Control Agent, served a search warrant on Major's residence Thursday.

Officers recovered two dozen fifth-sized bottles of liquor, several cases of beer, and paperwork indicating that alcohol was being sold illegally from that address.

The investigation led the Kansas Alcohol Beverage Control Agent to JD Liquor Store in Arkansas City.

JD Liquor was cited for "selling alcohol while directly or indirectly knowing or having reasonable cause to believe the person being sold to is peddling or reselling the alcohol." JD Liquor was also ordered by the Kansas Alcohol Beverage Control to produce three months of sales records that pertain to the sale of alcohol to Major.

A case will be presented to the Cowley County Attorney's Office for prosecution of Major for selling alcohol without a license within the week police officials said.
