Missed free throws, turnovers doom South Haven in loss

By MIKE JOSEPH
Traveler Correspondent

Unable to overcome turnovers and poor free-throw shooting, the South Haven Lady Cardinals fell to the Argonia Lady Raiders 53-33 in the semifinals of the Dale Misak/SCBL tournament Thursday night at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

Argonia played agressive defense, but also found themselves in foul difficulty most of the contest. However, the Cardinals could not take advantage, converting only 8-of-25 foul shots on the night.

South Haven led 7-1 midway through the first period, but the Raiders fought back to trail 10-9 heading into the second quarter. A 6-0 run early in the second quarter pushed the Raiders to a 15-10 lead prompting Cardinal's head coach David Hughes to call a timeout at the 5:04 mark.

Six turnovers matched the number of points the Cardinals were able to put on the board in the second period, with Argonia taking a 25-16 lead into the locker room.

The Cardinals opened the second half with a 6-0 rally to pull within three at 25-22 at the 5:33 mark. But Argonia was able to weather the Cardinal flurry and led 34-22 heading into the final period.

Argonia continued to play good defense in the fourth quarter, forcing the Cardinals to rush shots as the lead grew for the Raiders. Freshman Ashton Stansbury's three from the left corner with 3:13 left gave Argonia a 42-27 lead and seemed to be the dagger that took the wind out of the Cardinal's sails.

"We just didn't play very well," said Hughes. "They (Argonia) really pressured us the same way we like to pressure. We just didn't handle it very well. Taking nothing away from Argonia because they played very well, but we were just out of rhythm and our shots weren't falling."

The Raiders received tremendous production out of their bench as freshmen Ali Brewster and Stansbury led Argonia with 18 and 13 points, respectively. The bench scored 37 points for the Raiders.

Tina Clausen led the Lady Cardinals with 12 points, while Breanna Bryant and Beth Davidson led South Haven with six rebounds apiece.

Argonia advances to Saturday's championship game at 6 p.m. against top-seeded Dexter. South Haven will play in the consolation game against Caldwell at 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

SOUTH HAVEN 10 6 6 11 -- 33

South Haven -- Clausen 12, Davidson 9, Bryant 6, Dvorak 3, McConnell 3.
Argonia -- Brewster 18, Stansbury 13, Hemberger 9, D. Peetoom 4, Boatright 4, T. Peetoom 2, Pankratz 2, Blake 1.
