South Haven boys win SCBL tourney

By MIKE JOSEPH
Traveler Correspondent

Trailing 41-34 midway through the final period, the South Haven Cardinals rallied with a 12-0 run to capture the Dale Misak/SCBL championship, 46-41 over the top-seeded Argonia Raiders Saturday night at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

Senior Jake Davidson once again led the charge, scoring seven of his team-high 16 points in the fourth period. Davidson's runner with 4:02 remaining, followed by a steal and layup pulled the Cardinals within three at 41-38 with 3:23 left.

Following a miss by Argonia, Derrick Spencer was fouled by Marc Allen. Spencer drained both foul shots. Kalen Fitch rebound and put back of a Jordan Creed miss gave the Cardinals their first lead of the second half at 42-41 with 2:03 remaining.

With 1:37 left, Nathan Yunker intercepted a Raider pass on the perimeter. Yunker was fouled by Allen and converted both free throws for a 44-41 lead. Argonia could not find the range down the stretch, forcing shots.

South Haven spread the floor and ran the clock down to 44.8 seconds before Blake Brewster fouled Fitch. Fitch missed the front end of the one-and-one. Brewster was called for travelling on the ensuing Raider possession giving the ball back to South Haven.

Forced to foul to stop the clock, Lawson Hemberger's foul sent Yunker back to the line with 22.7 seconds left. Yunker, again, was perfect from the line. Argonia had two chances but missed three-point attempts on both possessions as time ran out.

"Jake definitely carried us again tonight," said Cardinals coach Darren McDorman. "He just never quits. We stepped up the defense in the second half, especially the fourth quarter. I thought we did a better job of defending their shots. We gave them too many open looks in the first half."

The Cardinals fell behind 16-10 six minutes into the first period, before rallying back to tie the score at 16-16 highlighted by a steal and layup by Yunker, who finished with 13 for South Haven.

The game was even through the second period, before Brewster's three-pointer with 10 seconds left gave the Raiders a 29-26 lead heading into the half.

Neither team could get much going in the third and headed into the final period with Argonia holding a 34-31 lead. With the Raiders leading 36-31, Davidson hit a three-pointer from the right wing, but Leander Greene answered back with a three and Clay Boatright's 15-footer gave Argonia a 41-34 lead.

"I thought we played with a lot of poise in the last quarter," said McDorman. "We did a good job running our stall game and then we stepped up and hit foul shots when we needed them."

Brewster finished with 17 points and eight rebounds, both game-highs, for the Raiders.

It was the first SCBL championship for the South Haven boys in recent memory.

Second Amendment
Does the Second Amendment guarantee an individual's right to own a gun, as the Supreme Court recently ruled?

Yes, that was the intent of the founding fathers.
No, the founders were only talking about militias.
It's still unclear.
