Offense sparks Cowley men to 10th straight win

By DAVID WOLMAN
Traveler Sports Editor

No. 12 Cowley College didn't need overtime to decide this one.

After needing the extra session to decide two of their previous three games, the Tigers shot a blistering 64 percent from the field Saturday afternoon in cruising to a 95-77 win over Highland.

Behind a balanced scoring attack, Cowley grabbed an early 12-6 lead and never looked back.

Eric McKinney and Jack Crowder sparked the Tigers early on their way to double-digit efforts. McKinney finished with 22 points and Crowder 15. Montrell McDonald led Cowley with 29.

After holding a 41-32 halftime lead, the Tigers built their lead to as many as 27 midway through the second half.

"I thought we had a lot more intensity in the first 30 minutes (than our recent games)," Cowley coach Steve Eck said. "I thought we were a lot more patient with on offense."

McKinney and McDonald each had a few dunks in the game, especially in the second half. McDonald scored 19 of his points in the second half.

Chris Rhymes added 13 points, including 9 of 10 from the free-throw line in the second half.

Cowley overcame a 40-point effort from Dewayne Wright, but held most everyone else in check. Wright scored 18 of Highland's first 20 points.

Highland (6-11, 2-3 Jayhawk East) scored 27 points over the final 9:41. But its efforts came too late, as the Tigers (16-1, 5-0) cruised to their 10th-straight win.
