West Elk boys, South Haven girls take third

By MIKE JOSEPH
Traveler Correspondent

West Elk used a smothering half-court trapping defense and lightning-quick transition game to dispatch the Dexter Fighting Cardinals 61-32 to take third place in the Dale Misak/SCBL tournament Saturday at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

Brett Koop hit four-three point baskets on his way to a game-high 22 points for the Patriots, who jumped out to a 30-14 halftime lead. West Elk was able to keep the Cardinals on their heels throughout the first half, creating seven steals off of their halfcourt trap, leading to easy layups.

Six-foot-three junior Taylor Lowe came up big for the Patriots, using his long reach to deflect passes on defense as the Cardinals brought the ball into the front court. Lowe showed his range, hitting from both inside and on the perimeter, scoring 14 of his 17 points in the first half.

An 11-2 run early in the third quarter put the exclamation point on the win for the Patriots, who led 41-16 with 5:37 left in the period. West Elk led 55-26 after three quarters.

Cody Minor and Tyler Marker led the Cardinals with six points apiece. Garret Pudden chipped in five points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds.

After the game, Dexter head coach Dennis Bryant praised his team. "It doesn't matter if we are down 20 or 30 points. We will keep playing hard and fighting. It would have been nice for our seniors to win this game, but we feel we have our program heading in the right direction. No one gave us a chance to make it this far and we finished fourth."

Dexter returns to the court Tuesday night at South Haven.

South Haven 57, Caldwell 38:

After Caldwell took a 17-14 lead early in the second period, the South Haven Lady Cardinals went on a 15-1 run that extended into the third quarter paving the way to a 57-38 win over the Lady Jays in the consolation finals of the Dale Misak/SCBL tournament on Saturday afternoon at W.S. Scott Auditorium.

After South Haven senior Beth Davidson was relegated to the bench after collecting her third foul early in the second quarter, Caldwell went to work inside with Haley Bruey scoring six of her 10 points pushing the Lady Jays from a 14-11 deficit into a 17-14 lead.

But Caldwell's lead was short-lived, as juniors Jordan Richards and Breanna McConnell picked up the slack, scoring six of South Haven's 10 points in the quarter. Their efforts helped the Cardinals gain a 24-18 lead heading to the locker room.

South Haven began the third period turning three consecutive steals into a 5-0 run, pushing its lead to 29-18.

"We wanted to come out and put more pressure on them (Caldwell) with our press," said South Haven coach David Hughes.

The Cardinal defense was responsible in holding the Bluejays to two field goals in the quarter while extending the lead to 38-24 heading into the final period.

Another 5-0 Cardinal run in the first 1:20 of the fourth quarter put the contest out of reach at 43-24. Sophomore Breanna Bryant scored nine of her 13 points in the final period, including a three-pointer and two baskets inside off great passes by Davidson.

Senior Tina Clausen got the Cardinals out to a quick start, hitting back-to-back threes in the first period, giving South Haven a 10-4 lead, prompting a timeout by Caldwell. Clausen led the Cardinals with 16 points. Lindsay Arnold led the Bluejays with 16 points. Bruey had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

South Haven got good production off the bench with Richards leading the way with 10 points. The Cardinal bench outscored the Caldwell bench 20-2 in the contest.

"(Assistant coach) Tiffany Cole and I have watched film and think going back to sending out waves (four to five players at a time) is probably a good idea," Hughes said. "Today we played very unselfish basketball."
