County approves grant to help fund business

By JEANNE RICHARDSON
Winfield Courier

The County Commission approved an E-Community Award Agreement with the Kansas Center for Entrepreneurship Tuesday morning.

The agreement will provide seed funding for small business owners in Cowley County, and was presented by Debra Teufel, director for Cowley First.

"We were one of only six communities awarded these funds," said Teufel. Network Kansas has helped several small businesses in Cowley County, including C.J.'s Pizza in Burden.

In other county business, some of the service fees for the transfer station and landfill were changed. The solid waste fee was raised from $30 per ton to $32 per ton.

The construction and demolition landfill fees were raised from $15 per ton to $20 per ton.

The contaminated dirt fee was raised from $3.50 per ton to $32 per ton. Cowley County receives a limited amount of contaminated dirt, and has matched its rate to other counties. These changes will be effective immediately.

Two right-of-way work permits were also approved. The permit applications were submitted by Southern Kansas Telephone Company (SKTC). They are burying cable in an area around Dexter and Maple City.
