Poljansek sets school record in shot put

By DAVID WOLMAN
Traveler Sports Editor

It was a mixed bag of results for the Cowley College track and field teams Saturday afternoon at the Johnson County triangular.

Cowley competed against host Johnson County and Coffeyville on one of the tightest-turned indoor tracks in the country. Still, it didn't deter the Tigers from winning eight events.

Sophomore Kelsey Poljansek led the way for the women's team. Poljansek, who has already qualified for the NJCAA indoor national meet in the shot put, set a school record in the event on Friday with a first-place distance of 45 feet, 8 inches. She also won the women's weight throw, recording a national meet qualifying mark of 45 feet, 3.75 inches.

Freshman Jessica McLeod qualified for nationals in the 1,000-meter run, placing second in a time of 3 minutes, 16.6 seconds.

Freshman Xandria Cash won the women's 400-meter dash in 1 minute, 6.39 seconds.

The Cowley men's team turned in five first-place finishes and a national qualifying mark by freshman Willy Lucero. He placed second in the pole vault, clearing a height of 14 feet, 0.50 inches.

Freshman Deion Ruble won the 400-meter dash in 53.84 seconds. Freshman Rolando Vasquez (4:38.32) won the men's 1-mile run; sophomore Dakota Price (1:23.80) the 600-meter run; freshman Sean Brown the high jump, clearing a winning height of 6 feet, 3.25 inches; and freshman Chip Broaddus (42 feet, 5.75 inches) the weight throw.
