Dexter girls roll past a depleted South Haven

By MIKE JOSEPH
Traveler Correspondent

SOUTH HAVEN -- Fresh off their runner-up finish in the SCBL tournament, the Dexter Lady Fighting Cardinals picked up a huge road win, 68-45, over a depleted South Haven Lady Cardinals team Tuesday night.

Dexter senior Camille Kahrs was nearly unstoppable, picking up a double-double with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Kahrs and freshman Alexis Hafenstein keyed a decisive third quarter for the Fighting Cardinals. Leading 33-28 at halftime, the duo scored 19 of the team's 22 points in the period pushing the Dexter lead to 55-35 after three.

South Haven was without senior Beth Davidson (flu-like symptoms); and sophomore Breanna Bryant went down midway through the first quarter with an ankle sprain and did not return.

With the score 38-31, Kahrs scored on three consecutive Dexter possessions. Hafenstein, who scored 10 in the period, got loose underneath and scored giving Dexter a 46-31 lead with 1:37 left in the period.

Following a Breanna McConnell three-point play that pulled South Haven within 12 at 46-34, Dexter finished the quarter on a 9-1 run, including a three-pointer at the buzzer by Kahrs.

South Haven led 16-9 late in the first quarter before Dexter put together a 7-0 run to tie the score heading into the second period. Krissy Kill's three-pointer from the right wing pulled Dexter within four, then Hafenstein, who scored 14 points on the night, scored in the paint. Sophomore Leah Lawrence's steal and layup with time running out knotted the score at 16-16.

Dexter pushed the lead to 33-20 at the 2:29 mark of the second period behind 11 points by Kahrs, but South Haven went on an 8-0 run, including a three-pointer by Christa Curl and free throws by Cassie Dvorak, Tiffany Cook, and Tina Clausen, to close the gap to 33-28 at halftime.

South Haven coach David Hughes was forced to go deep into his bench with two starters out and other players under the weather.

"It's just one of those things that everyone has to deal with at one time or another," said Hughes. "I thought the girls played hard, but we just got lost in our offense. Some of the girls that did play were not feeling well. Against a team like that (Dexter) you've got to have everybody healthy."

McConnell led South Haven with 13 points including 9-of-10 from the free-throw line. Curl chipped in eight points and six rebounds.

"I thought we did a good job on the boards tonight," said Dexter assistant coach Jim Fanning. "It was kind of a bad break for South Haven to have kids out and then have one get hurt. We have got to get better at taking care of the ball though. We had too many turnovers."

Of Kahrs' performance: "Camille does a great job of going to the basket and being under control. She came up big for us tonight."

Dexter improved 12-2 overall and 6-1 in the SCBL. South Haven fell to 8-3 and 3-1 in league play.

South Haven will travel to Cedar Vale Friday night to face the Fillies. Dexter will be back in action next Tuesday on the road against Udall.
