After winning its first five conference games, the Cowley College women's basketball team has stumbled to a pair of road losses, one of which came by a score of 66-58 Wednesday in Independence.
Cowley trailed just 28-26 at the end of the first half and fought back from a nine-point second half deficit to trail by just one, 49-48, after a basket by Elena Yankova with seven minutes remaining.
However, the Lady Pirates used a 12-2 run to open its lead to 61-50, and held on for the eight-point win. The loss drops Cowley into a third place tie with Independence in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. The Lady Tigers are now 10-9 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
Whitney Williams led Cowley with 17 points, while Gabrielle Curtis and Yankova also finished in double figures in scoring.
Cowley will continue on this gruesome road trip, which has them playing four games in seven days, as they will play at Fort Scott Saturday at 2 p.m. The Lady Greyhounds are 10-6 overall and 3-4 in the Jayhawk East. The Lady Greyhounds have three players averaging over 15 points per game and are led by Ashley Jappa, who is averaging 17.3 points and 10.9 rebounds per contest.
