Realtors celebrate their year

By CHRIS ROBINETTE
Traveler Correspondent

Realtors work throughout the year to sell homes. Many long hours are spent negotiating with potential buyers, making sure houses are suitable for sale, and dealing with unexpected financial issues.

They were rewarded for their efforts Monday at the annual Ark City and Winfield Board of Realtors banquet at Cowley College. Several realtors also spoke about their year.

Jonita Smith of Winfield, was named rookie of the year and she received an award for having over $1 million in sales.

She said she "felt good, all the hard work pays off. I am striving to make 2008 even better."

Joe Haggard, who's had 25 years of realtor experience and won an award for $1 million in listings and sales said, "I guess it's great."

A spokesperson for the Kansas Association of Realtors, Jamie Holt, talked to the group of realtors about current or recent legislation in Kansas pertaining to realtors. For example, as of July 2007 realtors are required to undergo a background check for felonies before they receive their license.

Holt also discussed proposed legislation that will possibly raise the fines for realtors.

Shandon Weston, President of the Arkansas City Board of Realtors gave an acceptance speech for her re-election, she also touched on her past year serving as president.

"We made a lot of things count," she told the group.

The group of realtors in attendance appeared to enjoy the awards ceremony and the speeches, many of the realtors found themselves up on stage accepting awards and door prizes, which were donated by local businesses.

James Buterbaugh, a Board of Realtors committee member said he enjoyed the event, adding that "some very deserving people received their awards this evening."

Debby Eastman, President of the Winfield Board of Realtors was happy to see the KAR and other representatives show up to talk.

"It's always important to have our representatives here to let us know what is going on," she said, adding that the issues they discussed effect everyone in the community, realtor or not.

The United Agency of Arkansas City had the most sales and listing, with over $9 million.

Realtors honored from Arkansas City were Rick Rush, Bonnie Niles, Dorothy Milliron, Shandon Weston, Lindy Folks and Connie Carder. Carder had over $2 million in listings sold and over $1 million in sales.
