Three arrested at game

From STAFF REPORTS

Three people were arrested and removed from Winfield High School during the Winfield-Arkansas City girls' basketball game Tuesday evening for disorderly conduct.

Cameron Marsh, 19, of Oxford, and Mario Elston, 18, of Arkansas City, were both taken to the Cowley County jail. One juvenile was taken to juvenile intake and released to his parents.

According to a news release from the Winfield Police Department, at about 7:20 p.m., two officers who were at the game as security, stopped three boys who the officers thought had a strong odor of marijuana coming from them.

When the officers told Elston to keep his hands out of his pockets, he refused, and the officer then grabbed one of Elston's hands. A struggle then started and Elston was arrested.

When the juvenile tried to intervene in the arrest, an officer attempted to stop him, and another struggle ensued. It was then that Marsh also refused to do what the officer told him to do, and was also arrested after a short struggle.

Winfield High School principal Greg Rinehart said this is exactly the type of behavior the school is trying to avoid during its athletic events.

"As far as I'm concerned, this had nothing to do with the game and what was going on the floor,." Rinehart said.

There have been several incidents in recent years during Winfield-Arkansas City sporting events, and Rinehart says the two schools have been actively been seeking to keep the rivalry between the two schools friendly.

"Ark City's principal and I have been trying to change the culture of incidents like this," Rinehart said. "I want to go down and compete and try our hardest, but we need to keep it friendly. Ark City and us are so much alike. We work together on a number of projects. We do a lot with Ark City and we value a good relationship with them."

An attempt to reach Ark City superintendent Ron Ballard for comment was unsuccessful.

Disorderly conduct charges were made against Marsh and Elston. Both Marsh and Elston are no longer in jail, according to an official with the Cowley County Sheriff's Department.

Second Amendment
Does the Second Amendment guarantee an individual's right to own a gun, as the Supreme Court recently ruled?

Yes, that was the intent of the founding fathers.
No, the founders were only talking about militias.
It's still unclear.
