Late rally falls short for SH girls

SOUTH HAVEN -- Despite a furious fourth quarter rally, the South Haven Lady Cardinals could not overcome turnovers and poor shooting, falling to the Oxford Lady Wildcats 38-35 Tuesday night.
Oxford opened the final period on a 9-1 run aided by two key turnovers by the Cardinals to lead 38-29 with 4:10 remaining. Following a South Haven timeout, Tricia Cook's steal and layup pulled the Cardinals within seven, 38-31, with 3:48 left.
Beth Davidson stepped into the passing lane on the next Oxford possession, stealing the ball. Christa Curl drove the baseline and scored shrinking the Cardinal deficit to five, 38-33, at the 3:09 mark prompting a timeout from Oxford coach Shawn Burkes.
Breanna McConnell stole the inbounds pass and was fouled by Katie Demel, giving the Cardinals possession. Cook connected from the wing with 2:28 left pulling the Cardinals within three, 38-35.
South Haven turned the ball over twice in the waning minutes, but Oxford couldn't take advantage missing the front end of the one-and-one twice after being fouled.
With less than 15-seconds remaining, the Cardinals took possession looking for the tie. Tina Clausen found Davidson open along the right baseline. Davidson's three-point attempt was short but Clausen grabbed the long rebound. Clausen attempted a three from the right wing but it was off the mark as the clock ran out.
South Haven was plagued by miscues on the night turning the ball over 17 times.
"We just didn't do a very good job of taking care of the ball all evening," Cardinals coach David Hughes said. "We have to learn to play with a lot more energy."
Trailing 26-22, Davidson hit a 15-foot jumper from the baseline with 3:03 left in the quarter. The teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter as Oxford went into the final period up 29-28.
"The difference in this game was they (Oxford) were able to hit their shots inside and we didn't," said Hughes.
Denise Swanson led the way with 10 points for the Wildcats while Lynsey Metz hauled down eight rebounds. Tricia Cook led all scorers with 11 points and Davidson had six boards to lead South Haven.
It will be a busy week for South Haven (9-4, 4-2). The Cardinals host Central-Burden Friday night and Norwich Saturday afternoon for a make-up game.
