Four to nine inches of snow expected
From STAFF REPORTS
A winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. today, a local emergency management official said.
Snow, heavy at times -- from 4 to 8 inches -- is likely, said Bob Frazee, the city's emergency management coordinator. It should be blowing, drifting snow, he said. North winds are predicted to be 15 to 25 miles per hour.
The drifting snow will result in reduced visibility, weather authorities said.
Arkansas City Police Chief Sean Wallace said there were no reports of accidents in Ark City proper as of 9:30 a.m. There were reports of a couple of non-injury accidents just outside of town.
Cowley County Sheriff Bob Odell reported there were about a dozen vehicles in minor accidents around the county, with an 18-wheeler off the road south of Strother Field and another 18-wheeler stuck near Rock.
"It's mostly just vehicles that have slid off the road or are stuck," the sheriff said. "No injuries or significant damage reported at this time."
Odell and Chief Wallace advised for folks to go slow just like any other day with snow.
"You can't break on dime," Wallace said. "Take a little extra time and drive with caution."
The weather forecast for tonight: Cloudy during the early evening, then gradual clearing, with a low around 13. North northwest wind 6 to 14 mph becoming southwest.
Friday's forecast: Mostly sunny, with a high near 39. South wind between 8 and 18 mph.
