Camper trailer stolen from driveway
By CHRIS ROBINETTE
Traveler Correspondent
Alarms and anti-theft devices are designed to protect homes and cars, yet camping trailers aren't the first vehicle that comes to mind when people try to prevent theft.
Unfortunately an Ark City resident, Dwain Shook, found out that anything can be fair game. Shook went to the local donut shop about 8:30 a.m. yesterday morning.
When he returned, he noticed his 16-foot Keystone cabana camping trailer was missing from its parking spot in front of his house. Shook immediately called the Ark City Police Department, which sent an officer to investigate and talk to Shook and some neighbors.
According to Police Chief Sean Wallace, nobody in the neighborhood noticed anything out of the ordinary, "Nobody saw or heard anything unusual," Wallace said.
Shook was surprised at first, saying that this was the "first time anything like this has ever happened to me."Shook has owned the trailer since 2000. It was a year old when he bought it. He said he used it to go camping at Kaw Lake, Winfield Lake and Estes Park, Colo.
Neither police nor Shook are entirely sure of how it was stolen, though it's thought that the trailer was probably towed away. Shook says that the theft might have occurred while he was at the donut shop, though he also said that the trailer could have been stolen the night before.
Shook doesn't believe that any other property was stolen.
The trailer is a 1999 Keystone Cabana trailer. Both ends of the trailer fold out for sleeping quarters.
The body is white with blue and some other miscellaneous details, according to Wallace. It is 16-feet long, with an Estes Park, Colo., sticker on the back bumper.
