Dexter girls respond to Callison's challenge

By MIKE JOSEPH
Traveler Correspondent

UDALL -- Coming into the game, Dexter head coach Debbie Callison was less than enthusiastic of her team's performance last Tuesday in a win against Sedan.

The Fighting Lady Cardinals responded by making the extra pass and playing tough defense in a 56-36 win over the Udall Lady Eagles Friday night.

"I didn't think we played well on either end of the floor the other night at Sedan," said Callison. "We needed to tighten things up tonight."

Dexter did just that, holding the Eagles scoreless for the first three and a half minutes of the second quarter, turning a 16-12 first quarter lead into a 25-12 lead. Jaimee Grinstaff found an opening inside and scored ending the drought for Udall.

Senior point guard Krissy Kill led the second quarter charge scoring seven of her 12 points in the period, including one from beyond the arc as the Cardinals extended the lead at halftime to 33-20.

Dexter pulled out to a 42-24 lead with 2:32 remaining in the third quarter. An 8-0 Udall run pulled the Eagles back within 10 with time winding down. Dexter senior Allie Crow put the Cardinals back up by a dozen with a 17-foot jumper at the buzzer.

Udall was unable to make up any ground in the fourth period as Dexter held the Eagles to two field goals. Cardinal senior Camille Kahrs scored seven of her game-high 15-points in the final period, including two steals and a breakaway layup.

"Overall, I thought we played well tonight," said Callison. "I feel like we need to get better on defense, even though I thought we did a better job of moving our feet and staying out of foul trouble."

Dexter continued to get balance on the offensive end of the floor. Freshman Alexis Hafenstein joined Kahrs and Kill in double figures with 10-points while Amanda Defore and Crow each had eight for the Cardinals. Kahrs pulled down 10 rebounds and Defore had seven boards and three blocked shots on the night.

"The girls really played well as a team," said Callison. "They did a great job of looking for each other and because of that, we were able to get a lot of easy scores inside tonight."

Dexter moves to 14-2 overall and 8-1 in SCBL play. Dexter travels to Burden today to face the Central Lady Raiders.

DEXTER 16 17 11 12 -- 56

Second Amendment
Does the Second Amendment guarantee an individual's right to own a gun, as the Supreme Court recently ruled?

Yes, that was the intent of the founding fathers.
No, the founders were only talking about militias.
It's still unclear.
