An autopsy done Sunday on a 27-year-old Winfield woman has ruled out violent trauma or assault, but local officers are still concerned over the cause of her death.
Officers from the Winfield Police Department, with assistance from the Cowley County Sheriff's Department, Kansas Bureau of Investigation and
Kansas Highway Patrol responded Saturday morning to investigate what they called a suspicious death Saturday morning.
Carrie Elizabeth Collins, 27, was found dead in her home at 111 E. 14th, Apt. 6 at approximately 7:35 a.m. Saturday. Her boyfriend from Ponca City found her body, according to Winfield Police Chief Jerry DeVore.
Due to certain conditions at the residence, officers investigated the matter as a suspicious death. Also, because of the victim's age, and circumstances, an autopsy was ordered.
"She was only 27 and she lived alone. When she was found, the door was unlocked and she was found on the floor," DeVore said. "We were just suspicious of the situation."
The autopsy has shown that the death didn't appear to be violent in nature, they still have not ruled out that it could have been a homicide. It could still be several weeks before complete autopsy results are in.
"We have no final designation yet," DeVore said, noting that they still need to get the toxicology results. "But with the information we have now, we feel much better about it."
