Kansas beats Missouri
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Losing to Kansas State didn't slow down Kansas one bit.
Since their perfect season was shattered, the Jayhawks have gone right back to their winning ways, reeling off two victories in a row including a 90-71 thrashing of Missouri on Monday night.
''That loss showed us some things that we needed to work on,'' said Brandon Rush, who had 19 points and contributed six of the Jayhawks' 48 rebounds. ''We didn't expect to lose to Kansas State, but they come back here March 1 and we will be ready.''
In Monday night's other Top 25 games, No. 16 Marquette lost to Louisville 71-57 and No. 25 Saint Mary's beat Gonzaga 89-85.
Missouri (13-10, 3-5 Big 12) had nearly its full complement of players for the first time since a fight outside a nightclub the morning of Jan. 27 threw the program into turmoil and left guard Stephon Hannah with a broken jaw.
Jason Horton and Darryl Butterfield, the last of four players suspended following the incident who had not been allowed to return, entered the game with about 9 minutes left in the first half. They were of no consequence. Neither managed to score.
That was left mostly to guard Keon Lawrence, who played 36 minutes and scored 25 points.
''We have been playing short-handed the last two games,'' Lawrence said. ''A lot of guys are playing a lot of minutes who aren't used to that. I think tonight the minutes kind of caught up with us because we didn't go after the ball aggressively at all.''
Missouri coach Mike Anderson had little to say about the situation. Hannah is recovering and could wind up missing the rest of his senior year.
''They've been reinstated, so they are back and playing,'' Anderson said. ''We're just trying to get better as a team. They've got to earn their minutes.''
Since the incident, Missouri is 1-2.
''We've had a lot of games here in the past few days, but the one thing I could tell about our guys is that they never gave up,'' Anderson said. ''They gave out, but they never gave up, and I think you can always work with it from that standpoint.''
Darrell Arthur scored nine points during a second-half surge for Kansas (22-1, 7-1), which won its 20th straight home game and swept the season series from their archrivals.
DeMarre Carroll, J.T. Tiller and Leo Lyons all had 13 points for Missouri, which hasn't won at Kansas since former coach Norm Stewart's last season in 1999.
Missouri was 0-for-10 from the 3-point arc, the first time a Kansas opponent did not have at least one 3-pointer in almost 12 years.
''I've never had a team that didn't score a 3-point shot, so that tells you how strange it was,'' Anderson said. ''But Kansas dominated the glass. They played well. Their size was to their advantage.''
The taller Jayhawks outrebounded the Tigers 48-25.
''We played well considering we were playing in foul trouble,'' Kansas coach Bill Self said. ''Offensively, we were good the whole night. Defensively, our guards didn't guard. They got the ball wherever they wanted off the bounce and we have to correct that.''
