Goodwin plans to run again

WINFIELD -- State Sen. Greta Goodwin, D-Winfield, announced Tuesday night that she plans to file for reelection to the state senate. Her term ends at the end of this year.

Goodwin made the announcement at the Cowley County Democratic caucus last night. About 500 people attended the caucus held in a church in Winfield.

She asked supporters to sign a petition to get her name on the ballot so she could save the filing fee.

Cowley County Clerk and Election Officer Karen Brooks said today the filing deadline for candidates on the November ballot is June 10.

Goodwin's announcement came as a surprise to some people, including Brooks, because Goodwin had indicated several years ago that she might retire after her current term.

Goodwin, a member of the state senate transportation committee, has said she supports extending Amtrak's Heartland Flyer line in Texas and Oklahoma north through Kansas with a stop in Arkansas City. She said she is optimistic that Kansas will move forward on a passenger rail plan. "It sounds exciting," Goodwin said.

Besides transportation, other key issues Goodwin will be working on in the upcoming legislative session include: coal plants -- "a hot item because of the negative decision on the Holcomb plant"; a district attorney bill that she has cosponsored creating district attorney offices in all 32 districts, if voters approve them, per district; and school funding -- this is the third year of a funding plan created after a Supreme Court ruling requiring legislators to provide additional school funding.
