Traffic stop nets drug arrest

An Ark City police officer made a traffic stop Monday in the 1400 block of north 10th St.

Before the officer was able to talk to the driver, the passenger of the vehicle, Edward Williams, 42, got out of the car and took off running police say. Officers questioned the driver, who was later cited and released.

Officers located Williams at 1017 West Oak. When officers reached the house they saw items that are associated with illegal drug use, which prompted a further search of the house.

Drugs suspected to be methamphetamine and marijuana were found and sent to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for confirmation. Both Williams, 42, Desiree Rankin, 26, both of Ark City were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and with intent to sell methamphetamine within 1000 feet of a school. They were sent to the county jail with a bond of $12,000.

Captain Tom Scott said that methamphetamine is still a problem within Ark City, its "still here, still prevalent."

"We continue to take whatever action is necessary to fight the war on drugs."
