SOUTH HAVEN -- Taking advantage of eight first half turnovers and a cold shooting night, the Argonia Raiders defeated the South Haven 54-41 in the final home game for the Cardinals.
After taking a quick 4-0 lead early in the game, South Haven must have thought someone slammed a lid on the basket. The Raiders went on a 15-3 run to lead 15-7 after one period.
Jake Davidson scored four points in the first period but was shut down the rest of the way, due, in part, to a sagging 1-2-2 zone defense employed by the Raiders.
After Derrick Spencer's three-pointer from 23-feet pulled the Cardinals within 10 at 20-10, Argonia's Blake Brewster was fouled by Kalen Fitch on a move inside. Brewster converted the three-point-play, highlighting a productive period for the Raiders, who moved out to a 28-15 halftime lead.
Trailing by 16 points entering the final period, the Cardinals were only able to trim the lead to 11 at 48-37 with less than a minute remaining.
"We obviously didn't shoot the ball very well tonight," said South Haven coach Darren McDorman. "Against teams like Argonia, you've gotta make shots. We just couldn't find a rhythm. Whenever we would get a run going, we would foul and it just took all of our momentum away."
The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Cardinals (12-4 overall, 5-2 SCBL). Fitch led South Haven with nine points and six boards. Leander Greene led all scorers with 19 points for the Raiders. Brewster scored 16 points to go along with 13 rebounds.
