Rubbermaid warehouse finds footing

By JOSHUA AMES
Reporter

The erection of the new warehouse being built for Rubbermaid in Winfield is taking on life as developers have laid the beginnings of the foundation for the gargantuan storage facility.

The development company, InSite LLC, out of Chicago, will be leasing the new building to Rubbermaid.

The new portion of the Winfield Industrial Park, which is located right off of the K-360 bypass in Winfield, will be the home of the new facility.

According to Michael Grant, director of operations for Winfield Rubbermaid, the developers have poured some of the footings for the first quarter of the building.

A footing works as a foundation for the beams that support the entire structure of the building and supports the floor and walls.

Grant said that besides the initial work that goes into constructing a building, the project is really just getting under way.

There's not a whole lot to report. They're working their way from West to East, and they've started putting in some structural steel." said Grant. "But of course, it has sometimes been shut down by the weather. If Mother Nature will cooperate, we'll stay on schedule. But as of now, we're still on schedule for a June occupancy date."

Winfield City Manager Warren Porter said even with the all the nasty winter weather, the project is still coming along according to plan.

"Construction is under way, but it's been slowed down by the weather," said Porter. "But they've still poured a number of concrete footings out on the site."

Porter says it may be deceptive to the eye at first glance, but a considerable amount of progress had been made on the project.

"They've moved a lot of dirt and most people, when they drive by, won't see much until the walls come up," he said.

Porter added that the city has gone ahead and issued contracts for water and sewer lines to the warehouse and has assigned the contracts a $18 million value.

The 660,000-square-foot building, which will cover 15 acres itself, will be the biggest built in Winfield and the biggest to be erected in the state in 2008. With an estimated construction cost of $14-16 million, the new warehouse will be four times as big as the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Winfield, according to Porter.

The new warehouse is expected to bring 60 jobs to the Winfield area.
