John Bul Dau to speak at Cowley on Feb. 18

John Bul Dau, one of the "Lost Boys of Sudan", will discuss his life story and the importance of perseverance against all odds while serving as the featured speaker at Cowley College on Feb. 18.

Dau's presentation, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Robert Brown Theatre, will also focus on the importance of human rights and on ending the tragedy in Darfur. High school and college students will be admitted free, while the cost is just $5 for the general public.

Dau has experienced journeys in life that most people never imagine. He was born in war-torn Sudan, and in 1987, his village was attacked by government troops involved in the civil war involving the Muslim-controlled government in northern Sudan and the non-Muslims in southern Sudan.

The violence scattered his family, and Dau was forced to travel on foot for three months until reaching the relative safety of Ethiopia.

Dau stayed in a refugee camp in Ethiopia for four years, but civil war then broke out, and he was once against forced to flee. As one of thousands of Sudanese Lost Boys.

He wandered hundreds of miles and faced disease, starvation, and violence, until arriving in Kenya. After several years living in another refugee camp, he was sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church in Skaneateles, New York, and along with three other Lost Boys, came to the United States in 2001.

Farmer Rancher Appreciation Day Feb. 16th

Along with bizarre weather, the month of February brings us Farmer Rancher Appreciation Day held at the Agribusiness Building- Ark City from 9:00 to noon. This event is an opportunity to thank our Farmers and Ranchers for their dedication and hard work. This year's activity will entail a Biscuits and Gravy breakfast served up by the Ark City and Winfield FFA Chapters and a speaker provided by Kansas Farm Bureau.

Terry Holdren, National Director of Governmental Relations will be speaking to the group about a serious issue that left un-attended will negatively affect each and every one of our local producers.

At issue is the definition of the first leg of the transportation of a commodity from the farm. Current understanding is, the first leg is considered to be intrastate commerce (within a state) and agricultural transportation has been exempt from most regulations. However, the Kansas Corporation Commission recently announced its intention to regulate that first leg of transportation as interstate commerce with the reasoning that the grain going to the local elevator will be soon heading elsewhere, out of state or out of the country.

Under the designation of interstate commerce, farmers will be subject to federal trucking regulations, the same as if they were over the road truckers. Most everyone seems to agree there is a huge difference between over-the-road truckers and a farmer hauling wheat to the local co-op. It appears the resolution to this situation would be the obvious but, then you have to wonder how a situation like this ever got started let alone this far.

Come enjoy a little food for thought.

Sponsored by Cowley County K-State Extension, Cowley County Farm Bureau, Winfield & Ark City FFA, Winfield & Ark City Chambers of Commerce.
