DEXTER -- Using their quickness on defense and in transition, the South Haven Cardinals jumped out to a big first quarter lead on their way to a 69-34 win over the Dexter Fighting Cardinals Friday night.
South Haven held Dexter without a field goal for the first 4 1/2 minutes of the game before Bradley Berkley hit a three pointer with 2:13 left in the period. South Haven then went on an 11-3 run to lead 19-7 after one quarter. Dexter turned the ball over four times late, resulting in fast break baskets for South Haven.
A 9-3 run to begin the second quarter gave South Haven a 28-10 lead. Berkley and Cody Minor hit three pointers and Garret Pudden scored inside pulling Dexter within 30-18.
Derrick Spencer's steal and layup with 1:20 left in the half gave South Haven a 34-18 advantage heading into the locker room. Spencer scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half. Senior Jake Davidson shook off a sub-par performance from Tuesday with 10 points in the half. Davidson had two layups and dominated inside the paint for South Haven.
"It all starts with defense," said South Haven coach Darren McDorman. "We shot the ball a lot better and made good plays."
South Haven put the contest away in the third quarter, jumping out to a 44-20 lead midway through the period. Highlighting the run was a steal by Davidson, who pitched the ball ahead on the break to Jordan Creed. Creed's no-look pass to a streaking Nathan Yunker resulted in a layup as South Haven was hitting on all cylinders.
Creed gave South Haven a 60-31 lead on a nifty post move for a reverse layup with time running out in the period. Creed scored six points and led South Haven with eight rebounds.
"We did a real good job looking for the post tonight and we passed well in the post," said McDorman. "The guys were really looking for each other and we moved well in our offense."
Davidson led South Haven with 18 points while Yunker contributed 14 points and five boards.
"We just told the kids to go out and have fun.," said McDorman. "Derrick (Spencer) shot the ball well from the outside and it opened up a lot of things inside for us."
Dexter coach Dennis Bryant said, "They (South Haven) made the adjustments tonight and basically shut us down. I thought maybe we let up a bit and we need to get back to going hard all game long. We have regionals coming up and we think we match up pretty well with the teams in our regional. We will just go back and get focused again."
South Haven (13-4, 6-2) closes out the regular season with games at Caldwell and Oxford (Monday and Tuesday) and will finish next Friday at Elk Valley.
