Mayes' 30 leads Oxford boys to rout of Dexter

By MIKE JOSEPH
Traveler Correspondent

DEXTER -- Bryce Mayes scored 30 first-half points propelling the Oxford Wildcats to a 52-17 halftime lead on their way to a 70-32 win over the Dexter Fighting Cardinals Friday night.

Oxford put on a defensive transition display in the first period. The Wildcats half court trap resulted in 12 steals. The steals were pitched ahead for easy layups as Oxford built a 30-6 lead after one quarter. Mayes, the junior forward, scorched the nets for 18 points in the period, including four baskets from beyond the arc.

Dexter cut down their turnovers in the second period but couldn't put a dent in the Oxford lead. Sophomore Ryan Reimer came off the bench for the Cardinals scoring four points on offensive rebounds and putbacks. Reimer has seen more playing time lately due to his effort on the floor for Dexter.

"We are a young team," said Dexter coach Dennis Bryant. "Ryan (Reimer) and freshman Connor (Stone) have made a lot of progress this season. They are a big part of the future of this team."

Dexter outscored the Wildcats in the third period but trailed 63-29 heading into the final quarter. Junior Garret Pudden scored eight of his team-high 12 points in the third quarter, showing his range from 12 to 15 feet.

"Garret works his tail off inside," said Bryant. "Oxford had a height advantage on us but Garret was tough on the boards and always goes strong to the basket."

Bryce Carter chipped in 13 points for the Wildcats while Brad Potucek led the team with nine rebounds.

Stone grabbed seven rebounds for the Cardinals.

"These kids have nothing to hang their heads about," said Bryant. "Oxford is one of the best teams in the state in 2A. Our kids gave 110 percent all year. We like the way our regional sets up. We feel like we match up pretty good against whoever we have to play."

Dexter will face Altoona-Midway in the first round of the Class 1A regionals at home on Monday.

OXFORD 30 22 11 7--70
DEXTER 6 11 12 3--32

Oxford -- Mayes 30, Carter 13, Hampton 9, Potucek 8, Huckabey 8, Brown 2.
Dexter -- Pudden 12, Berkley 7, Reimer 4, B. Pappan 2, Muntz 2, Marker 2, Stone 2, E. Pappan 1.
