State Rep. Kasha Kelley, R-Arkansas City, said she has no plans at present to run against State Sen. Greta Goodwin, D-Winfield, in the election next November.
Kelley was responding to rumors that she would challenge whoever would run for Goodwin's seat in the upcoming election. Goodwin said she plans to run again, and said at the Democratic Caucus that she expects to run against Kelley.
But Kelley is not so sure.
"I get asked that question almost daily," Kelley said in a recent e-mail to the Traveler. "Although Greta says numerous things about me, one of them that I am running against her, the interesting thing is that running for that seat hasn't been in my plans.
"That said, as she has stirred so much dialogue about it, I have had a strong number of folks asking me to run."
Goodwin could not be reached today or Friday for comment.
Kelley is in her first term in the Kansas House of Representatives. She was elected to the house in 2005.
"Because I have been approached the number of times I have now (about running against Greta), I am thoughtfully considering it and trying to take a wise approach to vetting reasons for running," Kelley said.
"Most importantly, I am canvassing constituents about what their desire is for my service - House or Senate - and I think that's the most important factor because they are why I am in Topeka in the first place. Beyond that, I have truly made no decision."
The filing deadline for candidates is June 10.
Goodwin began her first term in the Senate in 1997.
She surprised some people when she announced at the Feb. 5 Cowley County Democratic caucus in Winfield she would run for another term.
Goodwin had indicated several years ago that she might retire after her current term.
