City could rename north pond
City Commissioners may decide to officially name the North Pond, McFarland's Pond when it meets Tuesday night.
The pond, off Radio Lane, currently has no official name, but is referred to as North Pond on some city maps. The pond was a quarry owned by the McFarland family, and is known as McFarland's pond by area fishermen.
At a recent meeting four people approached the commission with the idea of renaming the pond.
They were told to take their request to the city's beautification board, which has given the change its blessing.
They also requested that the pond be opened for fishing, which could also be discussed.
Other items on the agenda include:
* A public hearing on the de-annexation of property north of Skyline Drive. This land was annexed at the request of the property owner during the deal that could have brought a Lowe's to Arkansas City. Part of that agreement was that the land would be de-annexed if the deal did not go through.
The Tax Increment Finance district was voted down, which effectively killed the deal in December.
* An ordinance to de-annex the property north of Skyline Drive.
* An ordinance levying a charge on various properties in the city for weed mowing as well as removal of junk and debris. These assessments will be included on property tax bills.
* Consider a property purchase request for lot on the northwest corner of Summit and Birch streets.
The City Commission will hold its work session meeting today at 5:30 p.m. The regular meeting is Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Commissioners may continue discussing goals for the upcoming year. They hope to narrow a list to about 10 items as they consider their budget this spring.
