Ark City athlete among honored at Jayhawk game

LAWRENCE -- Loye Sparks, an Arkansas City athlete, was among hundreds of former University of Kansas basketball players who were honored at a halftime ceremony Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.

Sparks was a 1959 graduate of Arkansas City High School and also played for the Arkansas City Junior College Tigers during the 1959-60 and 1960-61 seasons, before he played for the Jayhawks.

Team members of several KU coaches lined the floor at the fieldhouse during halftime of the KU game against Colorado, which the Jayhawks won. The coaches included Dick Harp, Ted Owens, Larry Brown, Roy Williams and current coach Bill Self. Owens and Brown were present.

Especially honored was the 1988 NCAA championship team including Danny Manning.

The halftime event was billed as "110 Years of KU Basketball."
