Frances Willard Elementary School students yell in celebration after finding out they had raised $1,673.29 in just over two weeks for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society "Pennies for Patients" program.
Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and high school students throughout the country. The funds, collected during a three-week period, benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The Pennies for Patients campaign began in the Society's North Carolina Chapter in 1995.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, based in White Plains, NY, is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services.
The Society's mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
Since its founding in 1949, the Society has invested more than $550.8 million for research specifically targeting blood cancers.
