Ice going away, roads improving

By FOSS FARRAR

After a day of hazardous road conditions, the weather appears to be clearing off, a local emergency management official said this morning. A few minor traffic accidents were reported in Arkansas City.

The National Weather Service had lifted its hazardous weather outlook for the Cowley County area by this morning, after the county received from one-half to three inches of sleet early Thursday.

"Hopefully, by tomorrow this (ice) will be melted off," said Bob Frazee, the emergency management coordinator for Arkansas City. "We may see some rain or snow in the morning but it's not supposed to amount to anything."

The National Weather Service predicted temperatures would rise to the early 40s today with a north wind around 5 miles per hour, becoming calm.

The low tonight is expected to be around 25, according to the NWS, with calm wind becoming southeast between 4 and 7 mph.

Saturday's forecast: A chance of snow, mixing with rain after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. East wind between 7 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

A 20 percent chance of snow is predicted for Saturday night, with a low around 26. The forecast for Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 52. Northwest wind at 6 mph becoming south.

The Ark City Police Department reported six accidents from Feb. 21 into the early morning hours of Feb. 22. Police Capt. Tom Scott said "bridges and overpasses" along with intersections are the biggest problem areas for drivers.

Only one injury accident has been reported. A woman driving on West Madison was unable to bring her vehicle to a stop and hit a tree. Her injuries were not serious and she did not require transport to the hospital.

"People are certainly being cautious," said Scott, adding, "All in all it has been a pretty good last few days."

The accident counts for severe weather such as ice has dropped compared to storms that occurred earlier in the year.
