Cowley men's track and field wins Jayhawk East

Cowley College walked into the Region VI/Jayhawk Conference indoor meet on Sunday a wounded bunch, with many battling the flu.

Several attempted to gut it out, but a few had withdraw from their respective events after being able to battle the symptoms for only so long.

"It affected us in some areas, and the women's team probably more than the men's," Cowley coach Mark Phillips said.

Even with the illness being rampant throughout the team, Phillips was expecting better results in certain areas from his team.

"We had some really good performances and we had some really bad performances," he said.

The Cowley men's team won the Jayhawk East title with 185 points, finishing 23 points ahead of runner-up Johnson County (162).

"We knew that we were going to be in a battle with Johnson," Phillips said. "We really thought that we'd finish a little higher in the region, but we knew that it was going to be tough. We just kind of out-bodied them, especially in the middle-distance races is where we got them."

The Tigers had three crowned both Region VI and Jayhawk East Conference champions.

Kelsey Poljansek put on a dominating performance in the women's shot put, winning the event by four feet.

"She finally put some stuff back together in the shot put and really dominated it," Phillips said.

Jordan Pote won the pole vault, clearing a height of to win the event.

"He kind of came through in a tough competition when it mattered," Phillips said. "He did the same thing last year. He won the region championship on a jump-off...He had a tough warm-up (on Sunday) and battled and came through. He had a good meet."

Jonathan Cherono was crowned champion in the men's 5,000-meter run. Cherono was also crowned Jayhawk East champion in the 3,000-meter run.

Cowley had seven others win Jayhawk East individual titles.

Harrison Philp was crowned conference champion in the men's 1,000-meter run, Mauricio Morales in the 1-mile run. Philp, Larry Hill, Matt Silvosky and Dakota Price teamed to win the conference title in the men's 4x800-meter relay race. Philp, Mark Butler, Dwight Jenkins and Rolando Vasquez teamed to win the conference title in the men's distance medley relay race.

Jessica McLeod was crowned conference champion in both the 1-mile and 800-meter run, Janee' Gabbard in the 1,000-meter run and Jeniffer Cherono in the 5,000-meter run.

Both the Cowley men's and women's teams placed fifth in the Region VI standings. The Lady Tigers finished third in the Jayhawk East.

Butler County won the men's Region VI title and Barton County the women's Region VI title. Johnson County captured the women's Jayhawk East title.
