Some ballots not getting to voters
School bond vote deadline March 4
Nearly 20 percent of the ballots mailed out for the school bond referendum have been returned to the county, the county clerk's office said today.
Out of nearly 10,400 ballots sent by the County Clerk's office in February, over 2,000 have been returned by the post office marked undeliverable.
Registered voters who have not received a mail-in ballot and wish to vote must contact the Cowley County Clerk's office by phone at 441-4500.
Deputy County Clerk Patty Van Etten said often people move and do not change their voter's registrations along with their addresses. This results in ballots being mailed to a previous address.
She said voters should call the clerk's office if they have not received a ballot. The clerk's office can then check to see if the ballot has been returned by the post office.
If you have not received a ballot and are a registered voter living in USD 470, you must call the County Clerk's office.
You will be mailed a request form to receive a replacement ballot. The form must be filled out, notarized and mailed back to the County Clerk's office.
It is also possible to go to the Clerk's office in Winfield and fill out the request on site. They are capable of notarizing the document at that time.
The ballot must be in the Clerk's office by noon March 4 to be counted in the vote.
The ballots are not opened until after the election is closed. They are secured in a locked vault at the County Court House in Winfield, and taken from the vault and counted by a board made of a dozen election workers from the Ark City area.
Van Etten said they hope to have the count finished Tuesday evening.
Questions can be directed to the Cowley County Clerk's office at 441-4500.
