Cowley baseball goes 1-2 at Eastern Okla.

By RAMA PEROO

Having dropped the first two games of its three-game set at No. 22-ranked Eastern Oklahoma State College over the weekend, the No. 10-ranked Cowley College baseball team took out some of its frustration with a 12-5 win in the final game.

Cowley played one nine-inning game on Saturday and trailed 7-2 entering its final at bat. However, the Tigers rallied to score five times in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 7-7. Cowley got five hits in the inning, including a two-run double by Tyson Parks and run scoring singles by Tom O'Gorman and Frank Specht.

The good feelings for the Tigers would be short lived as Eastern Oklahoma would take advantage of a couple of walks by Cowley reliever Michael Flanagin (0-2) and scratch across the winning run with two outs.

John Maler started on the mound for the Tigers and allowed six hits and four runs in two innings pitched. Jared Shelton and Calvin Drinnen followed on the mound for the Tigers and each pitched two scoreless innings of relief. Chris O'Brien pitched the seventh and eighth innings and allowed three hits and two earned runs.

Brice Cole and Frank Specht each hit solo home runs for the Tigers and finished with two hits apiece. Parks and Tom O'Gorman also had two hits for Cowley in the loss.

Cowley would return to the diamond to play a doubleheader on Sunday. The Tigers got a strong start on the mound from freshman Stephen Kohlscheen as the 6-foot-6 right-hander allowed just one base runner in his three innings pitched.

Luke Zeller relieved Kohlscheen and allowed an unearned run in the fifth inning. Trailing 1-0, Cowley got a solo home run from O'Gorman, his third of the year, to tie the game at 1-1. The Mountaineers would regain the lead on a RBI double by Casey Gibson with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Cowley loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but O'Gorman grounded into a double play to end the game. Zeller (0-1) took the loss as he allowed four hits and one earned run in three innings pitched. Specht had two of Cowley's four hits in the defeat.

Sophomore Ashton Mowdy picked up the win for Eastern Oklahoma as he allowed just four hits in six innings.

In the nightcap, Cowley trailed 2-0 after four innings of play. However, Cowley would send nine batters to the plate in a five-run fifth inning and went on to score 12 runs over the game's final five innings.

Chase Roten and Specht hit back-to-back doubles to start the sixth inning and O'Gorman followed with a two-run homer, his fourth in four games, to increase the Tigers' lead to 8-2.

Cowley would score another run in the seventh and three more in the ninth as they picked up their first win of the season. Alex Schell (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win. Curt Simpson started on the mound and allowed two runs, one earned, in two innings of work. Connor Farris followed with two scoreless innings before handing the ball over to Schell.

O'Gorman went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, while Roten and Travis Carney finished with three hits apiece. Cowley made up for the six errors it committed by out-hitting the Mountaineers 15-5.

Cowley will look to make it two wins in a row when they play at Butler Community College Tuesday at 2 p.m.
