Lady Tigers dominate Independence

Getting strong starting pitching and hits throughout its lineup, the No. 8-ranked Cowley College softball team had no trouble sweeping a doubleheader against Independence Tuesday in Arkansas City.
The Lady Tigers needed just five innings to win the first game 14-0, and then took the nightcap by a score of 9-2.
"I was pleased with the way we came out and jumped on them in the first game," Cowley coach Ed Hargrove said.
Sophomore Heather Davis (3-0) allowed just one hit and struck out 11 batters in the five-inning win of game one.
"Heather was real sharp," Hargrove said.
Cowley scored three runs in the first inning and increased its lead to 5-0 on a two-run double by Kashilia Young in the second. Cowley would bust the game open in the third inning as they sent 14 batters to the plate and scored nine times.
Eleven Lady Tigers had hits in the win. Breayle Tackett led Cowley's 14-hit attack by going 3-for-3 with four RBI.
In the nightcap, freshman Jacey Juden picked up her first win as a Lady Tiger as she allowed four hits and no earned runs in seven innings pitched. Juden struck out 11 and walked five.
"Jacey had by far her best outing so far," Hargrove said.
After falling behind 1-0, Cowley gave Juden some breathing room by scoring six times in the bottom of the first inning. Jessica Sanchez's two-run double highlighted the six-run first.
Cowley got an RBI double by Tackett and a run scoring single by Young in the second to lead 8-1. Freshman Jenna Klick added an RBI single in the fifth inning to cap the scoring for the Tigers.
After going 2-for-2 in the opener, Sanchez went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in the second game.
"She is getting comfortable and is a nice addition to the line up," Hargrove said.
Young went 2-for-2 with two RBI's, while Colby Hart and Sarah Smith added two hits apiece.
Cowley had 25 hits in the doubleheader, while Independence managed just five hits.
"We hit the ball well all through the line up," Hargrove said. "
Cowley will now turn its sights to Rose State, who they will host in a doubleheader today at 2 p.m. The Lady Tigers opened the season by splitting a doubleheader at Rose State on Feb. 12.
"It should be a real competitive doubleheader," Hargrove said.
