Dexter girls stun unbeaten Argonia

By DAVID WOLMAN

Considering how close their final meeting of the regular season was, Dexter felt good about its chances heading into last night's Class 1A sub-state semifinal against unbeaten Argonia.

Dexter lost to Argonia 52-48 on Feb. 19, but came out of it with an air of confidence.

The Fighting Cardinals carried that good feeling into last night.

The third time proved to be the charm for the Fighting Cardinals, as they scraped their way to a 41-37 win at Butler County Community College in El Dorado, leaving Argonia stunned.

"We knew that they were beatable," Dexter coach Debbie Callison said in a phone interview. "We wanted to take the 'A' out of Argonia."

Dexter lost both regular season meetings to Argonia, but the Fighting Cardinals won when it counted the most.

Neither team led by more than six points in what turned out to be a physical game.

Dexter led 21-17 at halftime and 27-27 after three quarters.

Foul trouble started to become an issue for both teams -- more so for Argonia. Davi Peetom and Ali Brewer, Argonia's leading scorers on the season, both fouled out midway through the fourth quarter. Hannah Hemberger also fouled out for Argonia, while Amanda Defore fouled out for Dexter.

Peetom's foul proved costly for Argonia, which was ahead by one point when Peetom had to exit the game. Allie Crow made the front end of a pair of free throws with under 10 seconds remaining for a four-point Dexter lead.

Argonia had a chance to again come within a single possession, but threw a pass away on the ensuing possession. Krissy Kill then took the inbounds pass and ran out the final three seconds.

Kill led Dexter with nine points. Leah Lawrence, Defore, Crow and Kahrs each added seven. Brewster recorded a game-high 12 points, while Peetom added 10.

Dexter (21-3) advances to today 1 p.m. sub-state championship game against LeRoy-Coffey County (22-2). Argonia finished the season 23-1.

Dexter 15 6 8 12 -- 41
Argonia 12 5 10 10 -- 37

Dexter -- Kill 9, Lawrence 7, Defore 7, Crow 7, Kahrs 7, Hafenstein 4.
Argonia -- Brewster 12, D. Peetom 10, T. Peetom 7, Hemberger 5, Adams 2, Stansbury 1.

Second Amendment
Does the Second Amendment guarantee an individual's right to own a gun, as the Supreme Court recently ruled?

Yes, that was the intent of the founding fathers.
No, the founders were only talking about militias.
It's still unclear.
