From STAFF REPORTS
A late rally for the Arkansas City Middle School eighth grade girls fell just short, as they lost to Newton 24-21 in the Final Walnut Valley League 8th grade girls championship game on Monday night at Rose Hill.
Trailing 22-14 heading into the final quarter, Cailtlynn McVey started Ark City's comeback with a layup off a steal. With 1:02 remaining, Marissa Oak made a bank three-pointer to get Ark City to within 23-21.
But that's as close Ark City would get.
Madison Pendry made one of two free throws with six seconds remaining for a three-point Newton lead. Ark City had one last chance to send the game into overtime, but Pendry took the ball away from Kelsey Stewart and ran out the clock to capture the league title for Newton.
Monday's championship was the final game Ark City played in the Walnut Valley League. The Bullpups will begin playing in the Pioneer League next fall.
Ark City jumped out to a 12-5 lead on a Stewart layup with just under a minute remaining in the first quarter.
Ark City led 13-9 at halftime, but were outscored by Newton 13-1 in the third quarter. Only a Mary Brantley free throw kept Ark City from being held scoreless in the quarter.
Stewart led Ark City with 10 points, while McVey added five. Pendry led Newton with seven points.
Newton 2 7 13 2 -- 24
Ark City 6 7 1 7 -- 21
